Exhaust help please
Exhaust help please
Hi guys,
I just received a set of AWE cats for my 997 carrera. I installed them to complement my AWE exhaust but am experience some sort of a whistling sound when I give little shots of gas and even under accelaration. The exhaust sounds great but that whistle is always there when I give gas. Can you guys that have AWE systems or even heard some tell me if its normal or if something might be wrong with my system. I thought maybe the system is supposed to sound like that but that would be really surprising to me.
Thanks Guys.

Whistling is definitely not a normal sound to hear in an exhaust, you might have a leak somewhere. Try starting the engine cold and going underneath the exhaust with a piece of paper, and hold it next to the exhaust flanges or joints. You should be able to easily feel the exhaust pulses on the paper if there is a leak. Good luck.
Yeah it is plugged........
I had him check the vacuum line at the back of the airbox that had the vacuum line that does to the solenoid(same one as the resonance flap)....BUT he said there isn't one for the 3.6 L....anyone chime in on this?
Also could it be the slip joint?

That is correct, the 3.6 997 does not have the vacuum actuated Helmholz resonator in its airbox.
As for the whistle, was the only thing you changed the cats, or did you alter the intake at all?
As for the cats, AWE crafts the stainless steel pipes, while the cats themselves are German HJS 200 cell units. I suppose it's possible that the core of one of the cats could be faulty, but I suspect there's a leak at one of the gaskets connecting the cat to the header, or at one of the O2 sensors.
Have you gone under the car with a friend tapping the throttle? Should be relatively easy to find.

I am thinking it could be the slip joints.
I am guessing that you had the guys at the shop that installed them check everything over?
I would suggest running them for the day, then looking underneath, you will see 'black' on any/all leak areas.
Hard to diagnose a whistle sound over the internet...

Hey thanks for the help guys. Im suspecting it could be coming from the gaskets that connect the cats to the headers since i reused the ones from stacy. I'll check at the shop tomorrow and let you guys know.
I had removed my cats recently on my exhaust mod and had failed to tighten one of those slip joints completely. You will definitely hear it if you do not have it completely tightened or clamped down tight enough. However, It would likely throw a code as it did with mine.
PROBLEM Solved!!!!!! I changed the sleeves connecting the cats to The mufflers and the gaskets between cats and headers and WOWWWWW! What a sound !! Thats the way the car should sound straight out of the factory! Again thats for the help guys and thanks to Stacy for those great Cats. AWE makes an amazing product.
