DIY VFE Supercharger Install Episode IV: A NEW HOPE
No I haven't.....BUT I think I would try and correct that before installing it.I am NOT sure what a paint chip could do to the internal of your motor...maybe nothing !
Better safe than sorry,IMO so I would sand it down on that inside edge to get rid of the loose paint....once the hoses are on you won't see it anyway!
IF you want to touch it up,just use a sponge, spray some satin black paint on the sponge and dab the sponge to the edge/parts you want to fix.I did it in one of my posts(to fix a scrape on the visible side)and the inter-cooler looked brand new!

Good advice! Thanks!

Just received the latest instruction sheet from Sean... looks good! Although my hoses look different and I do not think I have the hose interconnect pieces.

Gents,
I have a lot of projects going on right now. The latest of which has my car sitting at GMG for the next couple of weeks getting a suspension overhaul. So, I am going to have to put my FI aspirations on hold for a while. In fact, if anyone is interested in a lightly used VFE kit let me know.

Great looking car Jason. You need to get a drive in a FI car and once you do, you'll be hooked! I'm loving my TPC turbo and suspension upgrades. The car's personality is dramatically different - and if you track your car it would be amazing. If you can have a pro like Cattman offer to help and then delay/turn it down, it's like ripping up a winning lottery ticket! You've got the supercharger - install it!

Come on Jason. You're not going to get all practical on us now are you?
Seriously, given the capabilities of these cars, I agree with your plan to deal with the suspension and handling mods first, especially given your plan to track the car. After you extract everything the car and you are capable of, then perhaps FI would be the next step. GLWS.

Well lets close this out.
My FI plans are on hold for now and I am not sure what form they will take in the future. TPC and VFE are both tempting prospects and I will continue to learn as much as I can about FI on our 997's. I look forward to the time when I can proceed with something like this in the future.
I am sending the kit to a very good home. Eddie is a fellow 6speeder and an avid Porsche Tuner evidenced by his 996 3.8L conversion which will soon be FI'd. Needless to say, he is going to have his hands full getting this kit installed and I am sure he is going to have fun doing it.
Here are pics of the final pack-up. I tried to keep everything labelled after spending so much time doing an inventory. Along with my kit he is also getting a Suncoast 3rd radiator kit and Justatoy's custom coolant line brackets (assuming they fit).

I will be sure to post back here if and when my FI aspirations continue!

Now a Turbo kit by design is a simpler solution. Many will say that based on this alone, a Turbo kit is going to be more reliable or better. Yet, if you look at OE manufacturers you will find so many more SC'd cars from the factory (Ford, Merc, Audi, Jag to name a few) than Turbo's which is really only becoming popular now among some manufacturers like BMW and Ford (Taurus SHO). Some have been turbocharging for decades (Porsche, Mitsubishi, Nissan) with varying degrees of success and reliability.
I think you need to consider the quality and design of the FI kit as well. For example, Turbo's can be brutal on engines with the fashion in which they deliver power. A poorly designed kit might be able to deliver lots of added ponies but it will do it all at once and in a hurry. This puts a lot of sudden stress on an engine that was never built to handle it. But a well built and thought out kit, such as TPC's, wont suffer from that. Many will say the linear fashion an SC delivers power is "Safer" and might be an answer as to why so many OE manufacturers choose supercharging over turbocharging.
Personally I think both the TPC single turbo kit and VFE SC kit are awesome FI solutions for the 997. Both offer fairly linear power delivery. I do not think you could go wrong with either.
