Installed my side mirror aluminum lower arms...

15 Attachment(s)
I installed my next mod today. Just took me a little over 3 hours. I started with the passenger side first:

I removed the interior triangular trim cover first. There are two tabs on the bottom. Pry it out and up.

The mirror connector will be visible and needs to be disconnected. YOU NEED TO READJUST THE MIRROR TO GO TOWARDS THE CAR AS FAR AS IT'LL GO BEFORE YOU DISCONNECT THE ELECTRICALS. There are 3 torx screws that holds the mirror housing in place.

Attachment 507851

Remove the mirrors by inserting your fingers and carefully prying it off. It is secured by snaps. It's very sturdy and should not break.

Attachment 507853

Disconnect the wires to the mirror

The next thing to remove is the motor. In my 2009, there are 3 torx screws PLUS a center screw with tension spring that secures it

Attachment 507856

There are 4 screws that secures the motor to the motor housing. Remove this and set aside. This will expose the upper and lower arms of the mirror. Two additional screws need to be removed before the entire mirror surround can be slid off and pulled apart

Reassembly is the reverse of removal.

Next up is the illuminated door sills. I need to surf the net for instructions :D

Here is a link I used to help a friend of mine install the illuminated door sills on a Cayenne.

Caution. I think the installation of illuminated sills in a Carrera is substantially more involved than the link above the Cayenne suggests. The Carrera is very labor intensive, and involves door panel removals, interception of wiring harnesses etc. Not for the faint of heart. I settled for a set of non-illuminated aluminum sills and while I like the illuminated ones, I couldn't justify the huge price difference and installation hassle.

Thanks for sharing the mirror trim install.

Thanks guys. I am now looking for instructions on how to remove the door panels. Then, I'll try and figure out the wiring dilemma next.

Nice write-up! I want to do the illuminated sills too. I can't wait for your picture-by-picture guide for that one! :)
I did read the factory instructions for it and it is quite complex. For some reason you need to run wires from inside the doors.
Suncoast has the instructions available.

Nice write up, exactly what I'm looking for.

For anyone who's done this, does the whole mirror assembly NEED to come off the car if I just want to replace the upper housing?

fontana302 04-26-2012 05:08 AM

Does not need to come off car to replace lower.

Here's how to do it without removing the mirror from the car:

I assume 997.1 and .2 are the same then?

Good question - don't know. MA Carbon doesn't have specific install instructions for the 997.2 parts they offer.

997.2 mirrors are slightly bigger but I wouldn't think they would be too different internally. Can anyone confirm?

You're right. The instructions provided by MaCarbon applies to both types of housing. It was also confirmed by Lane from MaCarbon when I was doing my housing upgrade.

Just installed carbon fibre mirror housings on my 997.2, I can confirm for anyone whose interested that the assembly need NOT be removed from the car in order to change the housings.
