GPS DVD unreadable
GPS DVD unreadable
Hi,
I was wondering how many of you have seen this message when using their GPS. I can have the navigation map on while driving and it updates my position but when I try to enter a new address to get directions, it either takes forever to "load the data" or eventually just displays "DVD unreadable".
The car (fall 2006) is still under warranty although the dealer is only willing to replace the DVD drive if I also pay for a $450 a software and navigation disc update.
Shouldn't this be covered by my warranty?
Thank you.

Yes. Your dealer is a crook. Besides the fact that the latest NAV DVD does not cost $450. Quid pro quo should not be part of a warranty claim.

I should add.. Take the disc, stick it in a PC with a DVD reader. If you can copy the files off of it, there is nothing wrong with the disc. That should be enough info for them to replace the drive.
I already made a copy of the disc on my laptop and tried that but got the same "DVD unreadable" message. I don't think the DVD is the problem but the DVD reader but it sounds like they can only replace the DVD reader while also performing a "software update" and the latter is not covered by my warranty.
I would still push back. The drive is bad - under warranty. The warranty should bring you back to fully functional conditiion. If they can't replace the drive without doing a "software update" than in my opinion, that is their problem.
Tell them you don't need or want newer maps, just a working drive again. Or tell them you will buy the updated disc at their cost.

At this point the dealer is not responding to any of my emails. I must say I was expecting a lot more from their service department, as they got recommended on this site and I bought my car from them (pre-owned though). Here are some examples:
I brought my car in for maintenance, they never called to give me an update or let me know the car was done. The receipt says they called me to get approval for certain things but they never did. They didn't fill out the maintenance booklet. One of my rear tires needs replacing and they are only willing to replace all 4 tires, not just the rear pair. I can understand that policy from a safety point of view but when I ask them how one rear tire could wear more quickly than the other one, the service rep says that it seems that one tire is older/different than the other ones. Once I pointed out that I bought the car from them with these tires, he quickly changes his story to a discrepancy in tire pressures (I check every couple weeks, in addition to the TPMS). And now the NAV thing ...
Not sure what I can do at this point but I'll look into filing a complaint with BBB.

i do use copied dvd in my navigation (as i do not want original disk to get scratched) and it works fine, so if disk is readable by your computer it should work in your car too.
so, if disk is OK then DVD unit is not, apparenty.
