Track Liability Issues
Track Liability Issues
It's pretty well understood that unless you purchase supplemental insurance almost all regular automotive policies do not provide coverage at the track for any type of event. IOW, you wad up the car, you pay to fix it. So be it.
But are you covered from a liability perspective if you strike and injure someone or an instructor is injured in an incident? Would a typical umbrella policy cover you or do they have track exclusions too?
How about if you injure yourself and require medical attention. Will a typical health insurance plan cover hospitalization and care?
Are you responsible for making repairs if you damage someone's car (thinking more DE rather than racing events) and vice versa?
What if someone else (an instructor, let's say) is driving your car and wads it up. Is (s)he obliged to repair it? Who's on the hook if multiple people are injured?
Thanks for any insight any of you can provide. I'd like to get a better handle on potential exposure and take steps to minimize it if need be before ruining my retirement as a naked defendant in a large dollar law suit. I'll probably have to go talk to my insurance agent too now that I've started thinking about this. Best,

health insurance covers track activities since it doesn't matter what caused the injury. your car policy's medical and liability coverage do not apply, as far as I know.
liabilities rest on the parties involved. thus, law suit is common in big accidents. i would also refer to the release forms too. as far as i understand, you are on your own unless you get a track policy.
