Comments on the ski rack

Just got back from our first ski trip in the 997. All in all, it went pretty well. The rack is very easy to install and use. The big annoyance is the noise! Air passing between the top and bottom rubber cushions causes a host of noises depending on speed; a low speed whistle, buzzing, howling, and some multiple-frequency screeching at speed. So, anywhere there isn't an object being pinched between the top and bottom clamps I guess needs some filler.

I've had the roof rack on for a few weeks now. I installed it before Christmas so we could bring a tree home. The wife's car is a convertible so it was either drop the top and stuff it in the back seat, or I bring it home on the 911. The Boy Scouts selling trees got a kick out of that one. The rack itself makes a light whistling noise at speed but nothing near the noise the ski attachment makes.

If anyone has solved the ski rack noise, let me know. I'll have to experiment with pieces of foam or ???

Big surprise, we were the only 911 at the ski resort. Probably the only 911 on the road anywhere in Vermont!

Hey Mark, have you thought about putting on a front faring. The faring should redirect the air nicely helping withth noise. Ive got the same rack on my 997, with bike attachments. I currently dont have a faring, but Im seriously thinking about adding one. I think it will really help at hughway speed, with wind noise.
Im sure the Thule or Saris front faring should fit the slotted Porsche rack rails.

Yeah I had the same problem with noise from the bike rack. I think a fairing is the only real solution but haven't tried it yet.

BTW nice job taking the car skiing! Wish you had a picture with the tree on top, that would be classic.

That last picture is of the tree on the roof. Pretty funny, eh!

We have a rack store in Framingham, MA. I'll have to stop by and see if they can fit a fairing. Didn't know such a thing was even an option.
