I did some searching with regards to what brand oil/viscosity to use and the majority of the threads are 2+ years old at this point. Some brands reformulate from time to time and I was wondering what is the current preferred oil/weight for the 997?

Still Mobil 0w/40? I've always been a fan of Redline oils, although I know they're not on the "approved" list.

 

for winter - mobil 1 5w50, for summer mobil 1 50/50 mix of 5w50 and 15w50.
on top of it - a bottle of blue STP ZDDP additive.

any 5w50 racing oil overall should be fine, there are several brands to choose from.

It works for the engineers at Porsche, and I am no where near as smart as they are, so who am I to argue.

 

BTW speaking of oil sludge - i have replaced oil pan when my car was at 43K miles - car did not see anything than 0w40 oil on regular oil change intervals (means a LOT of miles on same oil) and oil pan was perfectly clean. no sludge, no deposits, nothing bad at all of what i expected to see.

 

I've used Mobil 1 0W-40 on my last 3 water cooled cars. All tracked with zero issues.
However, I keep thinking about a switch to Redline 5W40.

 

Three replies and three different recommendations already.

I'm partial to Redline 5w/40 as well and have used it in my 360 and S2000 in the past with great success. I understand the P-car engines are a bit more tempermental about oil issues though so was looking for some sort of consensus.

 

Did you expect anything different from an internet forum? Everyone has an opinion and everyone else's is wrong.

Same here. I swear the engine is a little quieter ( not the exhaust - mechanical noises)with the Motul Excess, which is Porsche approved.

 

Motul 5w40.

Have nothing against Mobil but I used to get small drips from my RMS after spirited driving (which was every day lol).

Switched to Motul and it hasn't happened since. I have less valve-train noise at idle also.

 

I know they paid for it but there's a big sticker in you engine compartment telling you what's recommended. Many options though.

 

My shop said Royal Purple works best for their cars (race and street). I havent tried it yet, anyone ?
