Driving home Out Of State car
Driving home Out Of State car
Did an extensive search and found nothing. Wanting to drive back a new to me P-car from MI to NY. How do I get temp plates without a title? Car has a lien on it currently. Appreciate all your help. Thanks
Why do you not have the title? It sounds like you have not officially bought the car yet since there is still a current lien on it...so you wont by doing much of anything plates wise.
Temp plates are only given to shops and dealers for the most part and I don't think they are supposed to cross state lines with them.

Car has been purchased. My bank is paying off the rest of the seller's lien so I will never see a title in my hands (I think). Is my only option shipping the car to myself. My bank has advised me it could take 5-6 weeks to receive the changed title. Thought there might be some way around this. Thanks again for all your help.
I did this (CA to AZ). I got a temp registration from the DMV (via website) which was good for 2 or 3 days and valid only between the current location of the car and it's destination. Think it cost $1.
I did not have title in hand and the car had a lien on it.

Once your bank has the title they release the cars ability to be registered in your name and get plates.
And I found this which may help you out...or may not

It wont take that long. Both times I sold a car private party it took about a week from the time the payment was sent from the buyers bank to the company that I had the lien with.

I find this VERY hard to believe unless you had something to say that the car was in fact yours.

And yes, getting the title from the lienholder should not take any longer than a few days.
FROM THE AZ DMV:
How do I obtain a trip permit?
If you bought the vehicle from a licensed dealer, the dealer will give you a Temporary Registration Plate that allows you to operate the vehicle for any purpose. If you purchased the vehicle from a private sale, you may obtain a Restricted Use 3-Day Permit which is valid only for the purposes of vehicle inspection, emission testing, repairs needed to comply with inspection or emission rules, or to otherwise complete the registration process. The Restricted Use 3-Day Permit can be obtained online at EZ Permit , or at any MVD or authorized Third Party office. In order to operate the vehicle for any other purpose, you must first complete the registration process. No more than three Restricted Use 3-Day Permits can be issued to any vehicle in a 12 month period.

I live in NYC too and bought my latest Pcar in Virginia from a private party a few months ago. Also wanted to drive it home. Basically, you can't get plates in NY without transferred title, bill of sale and some other paperwork. There are no temporary plates in NY for private parties. Some places (like Virginia) do provide temporary plates, but NY does not, and anyway the current lien would be an issue. My advice -- just ship it. It will be about $300 and take less than a week.

I bought a car from a private seller in PA and drove it home to GA - no liens involved - he owned the car outright and I bought it cash-in-hand. Apparently, PA requires the buyer to purchase a temp tag from the DMV (for something like $40 - can't remember exact amount) and it's only good between the seller and buyer address - apparently police would ask for it if pulled over before crossing the PA state line. Keep in mind laws are different in all states - GA does not require this temp tag.
The solution we worked out to avoid the fees was that we did all the paperwork and I had title in hand signed over, but we left the seller's plate on the car. If I got pulled over, I would just say it's not my car - still original owner's - legally speaking, I'm just driving a friend's car.
Once I got home, I mailed his PA plate back to him in the mail and registered the car in GA. This works assuming your seller is 'cool like that'...

You should get the title that says that the lien has been removed.
Go to Secretary of State branch, they will issue you a temp. license. You must show proof of insurance and old registration or title. You will also transfer the title there.

It took a few weeks to get my title from Porsche Finance when I bought my car from the previous owner's lease via private sale. The DMV had form for this if I remember right but mine was all done locally.
Eeesh .. when deals are this complicated is it really worth it ?
travel, his payoff , your loan , used car , separate states ... almost sounds like a car buying decathlon .
I would not drive that car even one block until all the parties sign off on it and give the thumbs up. Your bank as well as the DMV and your auto insurance company have got to give the ok (in writing on all ) .
How much could you possibly have saved to make this worthwhile ?

The only way I could drive the car back myself was to make two trips to MI... which I did not end up doing.
What ended up happening was I bought the car in MI and I brought back to MA the bill of sale and went to my insurance company. The insurance company then issued me an RMV-1 form (theres probably a different form for each state) with their stamp of approval along with a piece of paper stating that I have insurance for the car on the bill of sale.
Im MA that all I needed to get plates, no Title is necessary.
I didnt want to make two trips to MI (see the car, get plates in MA, go back to MI and put plates on car/drive back) so I bit the bullet and shipped it to myself WITHOUT plates.
This was all done without me touching the title. The banks/dealer handled the Title. I'll get the title once I pay off the car.
My suggestion is, and your only option it seems, to just ship it to yourself. Sure youll miss out on the road trip (believe me I really wanted to do that first road trip) but in the end its worth it regardless of how you got it to your garage.
Wow, it's amazing the vast differences from state to state. Living in GA and buying out-of-state cars is not that much of a hassle. I can insure the car starting on the purchase date before I even fly out to pick it up and pay for it. If I don't buy it, just cancel the insurance for it. As for registering the car, as long as I get a signed over title from the seller, that part is easy and only has to be done within 30 days of the bill of sale. People around here just put a 'Tag applied for' sign where the plate goes and it seems to work until you have time to go to the DMV. Of course if you get pulled over in that 30 days (as I did - got my first speeding ticket in 5 years my first week with the Porsche!), the officer only needs to see the title transfer and proof of insurance. As long as the sale date was within 30 days, you're legal.
Hmm, wish my memory was better. I bought brand new my car from a dealer in cleveland and drove it back to NY.
I just had my insurance broker and the dealer work it out. If i remember correctly, there was some type of temp plate on the car. I remember that because I got pulled over the next day for speeding here in NY and the cop was totally confused LOL.
Maybe it's different for new cars/dealer vs. private party.
