Good post - interesting article. Would have thought we'd have more than 3-5% of cars on the road as EV's by 2020, but maybe not!
As for the additional model designations, who doesn't like options? My coworkers were asking about new car pricing for the 911 yesterday. I told them among the 23 variants, you're looking at anywhere from $78k to $245k - they couldn't believe the range. It's funny because most average consumers probably couldn't tell the difference between a Carrera and GT2RS, but Porsche is not targeting the average consumer.

However - I'd venture to say that Porsche IS targeting the average consumer. The only difference is the budget of said consumer.
I believe you are correct in assuming that the majority of people don't know the difference between a base Carrera and a GT2, but the average owner may not know either.
I've seen it before - where a person goes into the dealership, and picks up the 911 on the floor. I was taken aback. It's all about priorities. If the person just wants a badge, it is an easy sale, because even then, it is possible the differences aren't known.
