What does it sound/feel like when RE-11s break loose?
2000 miles ago I put on a new set of tires. What does it sound/feel like when the RE-11s slide - particularly the rear end? The PS2s slid pretty easily, compared to the RE-11s, but I went from 6 year old PS2s in 295s to RE-11s in 305s on the rear. I feel/hear a scrubbing sound coming from the rear when I slide the rear end on both left and right hand turns at about 30 - 40 mph. Is it possible that the PSM is applying the break on the inside rear wheel? I've seen the PSM light come on with the PS2s, but not yet on the RE-11s (or I just haven't noticed). I'll take a look at the DME later, perhaps they were misfires during hard cornering, though the tank is 1/3 full and am still running original coils and plugs at 44K miles.
It sounds as if you are searching for the tire's/car's limits. Hopefully that is occurring in a controlled environment, like a track, and not on the street. I too run RE-11's and can tell you from first hand experience that while the tires are grippy (more so than the PS2's) and PSM is effective, it is possible to spin and/or snap hook a 911 so equipped. The laws of physics and momentum simply will not be denied when you go over the limit. My really well intentioned advice is to get a professional coach or driving instructor in the car with you and work your way up and have them help sort out the several issues your post raises. I'm not sure any of us armchair quarterbacks can offer much insight without actually riding with you. Sorry in advance if this comes across as "preachy"; I didn't mean it that way. Best,
I assume that if RE-11's are grippier than PS2's, as people are suggesting here, then it is likely that the RE-11's will hang on at higher speeds, but then let go more quickly. I agree with the suggestions that the limits be determined on a track where it is safer.
I've only broke the back end out during Autocross but it wasn't at all what I expected. I expected this violent grading feeling to match the screeching sound but instead it just felt like the back end was on glass. The whole process was very smooth from what I remember but I did have PSM off. The reason I did the AX was to push the car to loose control in a controlled environment to see what it could handle.
