Clearcoat thickness..How much can it be buffed over the life of the car??

How is the thickness of the clearcoat affected with buffing? Does it smooth out from the heat during buffing or get erased by the pad? How often can the clearcoat be adjusted. Can new clearcoat be sprayed over the existing clearcoat and paint?

Good questions - may be good for the Detailing Forum.

I've heard that every time you buff the paint, it's removing a micro thin layer of clear coat but it's negligible over the life of the car (even if you keep it forever).

Yeah there was a detailing thread by Todd Helme (one of the best detailers in the world). I will have to see if I can find it, but even with heavy compounds the amount of clear that was removed was very low. I was surprised by just how low it was. It would take close to 20-25 heavy heavy paint corrections to thin the clear to the point where it could be dangerous. For normal corrections this would not ever be an issue.

I have a black 997 and was trying to get rid of the small factory orange peel. So took Maguires 2000 grit & wet sanded the car, buffed it with "Finess-it" and it looked great. That's sanding it... AND buffing it! I think your'e safe buffing it.
