Avoiding water spots is the best plan - if you let any of it air dry, you'll probably have them - if you do, vinegar and water solution works like a champ and is easy to do - almost no effort required and far less damaging (probably not damaging at all) than tyring to "polish" out the spots which probably won't work well anyway.

I have only had to do it once on the car after I rinsed it off while out of town and couldn't do a proper wash - my live and learn experience is that a bit of road grime is better to live with than a poor wash.

I know the feeling. Are you close to your Porsche dealer? If so maybe ask if they can wash it for you even if for a fee. Some of the P dealers our way offer a free wash and coffee while you wait. They know the product and how to clean it without swirls and scratches. Its worth asking them before handing the job to a car wash.
