Valet joyrides
That's the thing about valet parking. I never use valet parking when i'm driving good cars. You don't even know how they drive your car, they could be testing your car around and when they get your car they drive it slow seems like they are all very good driver and careful about the car they drive. NEVER TRUST THE VALET PARKING! just like some other 6speed members said, just park at the valet spot or in front and pay them the valet price but NEVER hand the key to them.
I 1. plug in the OBD II and run a scan (just for show), then 2. slowly and deliberately scribble down the mileage, before i hand the valet the keys. Is enough to give me peace of mind.
Also something to keep in mind is most valet companies have a sign somewhere around their valet area stating that they are not responsible for any damages to your vehicle or items stolen/lost while in their "care." So even if they do mess your car up, you still have the pleasure of footing the bill!

Maybe an attorney can chime in w/ more information.
Despite my screen name, I now live in AZ. I have 20 year old twin daughters, which in itself can be a challenge. [For you younger parents, it doesn't get any easier as they get older - just more interesting.] So...at dinner one night, one daughter says "I have a friend who's a valet at this Scottsdale resort and he gets tips of up to $100". Two nights later: "My friend, the valet, let my sit in this cool $300K Lambo".
Trying to marry the two conversations, I told her that the reason why drivers leave $100 tips is to keep valet's friends out of their Lamborghinis.

Reminds me of when I was in college and a close friend of mine was a valet for an upscale beach restaurant. He told me about one night one of his co-workers parked a Porsche closest to the sand/water with the windows down as valets often do. A rogue wave came up and flooded the car. Needless to say the owner had a costly dinner. Valets are paid so little I would never trust them with my Porsche and avoid them at all costs with my other cars.
On a side note, my friend got to drive all kinds of cars as a valet...Ferrari's, Lambo's, Porsche's...and he swore that Porsche was the best. He went on to buy a Boxster S and later a 911 so I know he wasn't lying.

Porsches are the best...
My wife thinks I'm crazy for refusing to valet, but threads like this always help reaffirm my position. It's always a concern when booking hotels because there are many in busy metro areas that are valet only.
This thread reaffirms my **** obsession regarding never allowing a valet near my car. I'm glad to see I'm not alone.
Now . . . What about parking lots. I tend to get most of my excerise parking as far from the store or establishment to avoid careless door openers. I never take 2 spots (diagonal parking) since some Porsche hater might do some work on my car. On the street I'll search for a parking spot (distance is no barrier) that offers assurance that my bumper fascias won't be touched by some poor parker.
We're a sick lot . . . . . .

So after thinking about this some more last night, I wondered, "oh, I guess I shouldn't fret - I mean what are the valets going to do downtown with my 911? It's got a rev limiter, so they can't overrev, there's not enough room to blow a shift on a corner downtown - I guess I should relax after finding out they went on a 5 mile joyride - the car can handle it. The worst thing would be them dumping the clutch and taking off..."
Then for some reason I look at youtube and figure out they could have pulled all sorts of crap...

Images from Risky Business pop into my head - Tom Cruise with his friends in his dad's 928 doing donuts. Hell at least in that movie it wasn't valets doing it...
No more valet parking for the 911. EVER.
p.s. I did go out and look at my tires really hard to see if they got scrubbed a lot. Whew...

One trick, if you can remember to do it, is to have a pad and pen handy and just before you hand the car over to the valet, let them see you write down the mileage. It's an obvious ploy, but it at least lets them know that you're paying attention.
Personally, I'm with the others that stated if valet parking is the only option, take the daily driver.

much harder to dispute than with a hand written note.
