i do not like it all that much honestly, if they were so damn concerned to save fuel they could get 6th gear even higher as it is useless anyway...

but as they went with PDK gearbox as single one for both auto and manual I guess that was the only one decision.

I am extremely curious to see how will they implement clutch pedal for this ‘morphed’ gearbox. And how much will replacement clutch kit cost for this 'manual PDK' box.

BTW does anybody remember me predicting this stuff year or more before? it`s funny to be right.... marketing always wins, even if it sounds ridiculous originally.

Well, there is a reason why Porsche is one of the most profitable auto manufactures in the world ... they basically re-purpose and reuse parts across all their cars. And now the base 911 will share a motor with the Boxster (and maybe even Cayman, who knows). Not happy about that ... but it sure brings in the profit$.

Back to the OP though - I bet it is, as I can't see any other way that they will implement it (unless they move reverse or something, but no real point in doing that ...).

only 991 car i am really curious to see will be 991 gt3. for street cars i will stay with mine, it is more than enough for me for next 10 years or so, as long as it will last anyway.

so far i do not see from repoart anything about 991 car that would make me to prefer it over current GTS car package. but who knows. new stuff from porsche was usually better, except of that 996 car.

Agreed. I'm sure it will be a fine car, but not interesting in upgrading. Perfectly happy with the 997. Maybe in 4 years when my warranty is out and depending on how many little ones I have running around I'll think about it ...

Here is a quote from a recent Automobile Magazine article on the 991:

Updates to both transmissions:
... But the bigger change concerns the manual transmission, which is now a seven-speed. Where is top gear? All the way past sixth, a dogleg move away to the right.

Very interesting with that 7th gear...

Could they possibly add a "fail-safe" function ala the reverse gear with something like pushing the **** down to go into 7th sort of thing?

I can actually imagining myself shifting into 7th if i'm just cruising, whats the downside?

I did some testing this weekend and in 6th on the highway going cruising speeds I was sitting at about 3k rpm. No reason they cant give you a 7th gear to bring it down to 2k rpm for efficiency. I am really pumped about a new tranny with launch control!

I'm fine with the 7-speed tranny. Thankfully they didn't go to all PDK (a la Ferrari). And a very long gear is welcomed. When I'm on a long drive, I'd like to get it down to 2500 or so. As long as I'm not lugging the motor, it's all good.
But I remain concerned about the growing size of the car. I know it's only 2" longer or so but it's already very big. And with a 4" longer wheelbase, it really seems like it will be a sports car drivetrain in a GT body. Scary.

+1 on the tranny. Sick of hearing all the belly aching. I need to stay away from these threads...

Re the size, we'll see. I'm not too concerned about it, but not sold on it yet.

I think the handbrake thing is a bit overblown too, but I did recently have trouble with the electronic parking brake in my Passat wagon. I can't say I'm happy about it, but wouldn't call it a deal killer. Regarding the look of the interior, also not too concerned. I'm mostly interested in the dash from the drivers perspective and I'd expect that they're not messing that up. My 997 gauges are pretty good, better than the 996, but I'd prefer therapy look like I had in my 964. I know there's no way that will happen though.

My big concern would be the steering. I have confidence that they'll get that right eventually, but I think there's plenty new here to wait for a 991.2. Time to start saving...

It's no big deal. I'm sure ages ago when gearboxes were all 5 speed this was the same reaction. You don't want to use 7th, then fine don't. PDK in auto mode goes to 7th on the highway, even in sport. Who cares? It's nice to be fuel efficient sometimes.

Technology moves forward, Porsche 911's are evolving. You can live in the past, present and future as long as you have the chedder. Good day.

looks like a photoshop job on a 997.1 interior to me.

I can't believe there are so many here that don't remember the 4 to 5 speed transition by manufacturers. It was in the same location (up, right) in relation to 4th as this current tranny indicates 7th is to 6th.

Nobody back then had too many issues adapting.

I think I'm the only one that is looking forward to a 7th gear

I recall the awe over having a 6th gear in a car.. it was like "wow, your car has 6!!! gears?"
now I'll have the same with the 7th, assuming they don't botch the 991 and turn it into a Maserati wanna-be
