scratch repair options?
scratch repair options?
This just happened. It's right in the middle of the driver's door...In other words I'll see it every time I get in the car!! It's not long but rather deep - not a surface scratch. It will catch your fingernail in the ridge of the scratch.
Has anyone ever had something like this repaired? I'd love to think there is an alternative to painting the whole door. I wouldn't mind having the nose resprayed, or the wheel wells resprayed as they are sandblasted...but the door!? That I don't want to repaint unless its absolutely the only way to get rid of this scratch.
UGHHH....
Thanks for any help.

Scratch X may not help if its deep enough to catch a fingernail, but of course never hurts to try. A guy in my building has used dr color chip for chips in his black BMW, from afar you can't tell anything was done, but up close it was a bit ugly. Not sure if it was his application or what. Suncoast also sells the Porsche touch up paints too, that may be an option to try.
Touching up something like that and having it be (close to) invisible is a real skill, especially on metallic paint. First you need to fill it with paint, in thin layers, and build it up to above the surrounding paint. Then it needs to be flattened and blended with the surrounding paint as best as possible (chemically i.e. Langka or Dr. Colorchip, or by wet sanding), and then buffed/polished and further blended. Its an art. If you don't think you have the tools or skill, and are going to be picky about it, best to go to a professional.
Before you start, realize beforehand in the worst case you are looking at a panel respray. Be patient, go slow, especially with the wet sanding.

dr colorchip does not repair scratches. it says so on their site and i can attest to that.
your options are:
1. use scratch x, polish it and it will be less visible.
2. wet sanding by pro. won't eliminate it but will make it less visible even
3. touch up and then wet sand to flatten the excess paint. langka method
4. repaint
try 1 first. you may be able to live with the result. if not, have a pro do the other steps unless you want to be adventurous.

If it's as deep as you say it is, neither scratch x or wet sanding will eliminate the issue. Filling with touch up paint, wet sanding, then applying clear > sand and polish is the way to go. Leave it to a pro to do if you're not familiar with the process.

you can sand it and buff it but you are always going to see it. If you are satisfied with that, then spend all the time and money to sugar coat it.
After youve found out youre not satisfied then you can spend the money to fix it

Unfortunately all the easy fixes don't work well if the scratch has penetrated the color coat. You might try the these easy self fixes as they are cheap and you might get lucky. Otherwise you're better off painting the entire door.
I disagree. Repainting the entire door is only going to lower the value of his car. Just do a spot fix and it'll be fine. Respray the door and you'll just get a bunch of sharp eyed buyers to question whether you got into an accident when you try to sell the car.

Not sure how but I found this write up: http://store.carcareonline.com/repairpaintchips.aspx and I even called the place, the owner is a Porsche fanatic and talked to me for over 20 min explaining how to fix the scratch. What a great guy!!!! It did work, but you have to be very patient.
Good luck!
