McQueen 2.2S
McQueen 2.2S
Holy schmoley - not sure how many of you were following this particular auction sale, but it went for nearly $1.4mm this weekend. Okay, it's a very iconic car, but $100...maybe $110k is all the money in the world for any other 2.2 S in the world. That's a hell of a premium for cool!
In 2007, an ex-McQueen 1963 Ferrari 250 sold for $2.3M, about 5x what similar cars were going for at the time. And I assume you saw the 250 Testarossa in the same auction yesterday broke the all-time record at $16.4M.
I think with fiat currencies around the world breaking down, you'll continue to see wealthy individuals diversify into real assets, and at the same time, a greater acceptance of classic autos in that category. It's been a long time since art was first accepted as such a store of value, so if a Picasso or Warhol, why not a Porsche or Ferrari?
Does that make the McQueen 911 a good investment? I don't know nearly enough about that market to say. Probably as long as the number of millionaires in China and Asia keeps rising, it will be decent investment.
For me, I'd rather pick up one of those gorgeous Singer 911's that look just as good as McQueen's and probably drive twice as well.

I guess time will tell on the investment front. Certainly is an iconic car but 10x (or more) market seems stunning.
I'm with you on those Singer cars. They're pretty dear but I'm guessing the driving experience is in a different league.
Or I'd be looking at a perfect RS Carrera - for what, like $225k?

Wow.. I wondered what it would bring. You can buy a lot of car for that kind of money..
Obviously the buyer wasn't buying just the car.. he was buying the name. As long as there are those alive who remember Steve McQueen, the car will hold its iconic value.

McQueen was the 'King of Cool'; hence anything he touched is worth a premium.
Was this 911 worth those big bucks? Only if the McQueen 'coolness' rubs off on the buyer.
What if the James Dean Spyder was salvageable? It would be 'priceless'. Many of the Spyder clones are sold just because the buyer has the image of James Dean behind the wheel or filling it w/ fuel just before his mishap. Just paint 'Lil Bastard' on the rear deck, put on your red nylon jacket and pretend your James Dean. Quite a ride . . . . .
