I have that problem about 30% of the time. I have an 07 19k miles and factory SSK. When left outside in the cold weather it is worse until the trans warms up. The 2nd to first move usually doesn't help if I jiggling the shifter seems to help more. My 02 turbo with B&M SSK never had this problem. Never had this problem with Toyota, BMW, Nissan, or Dodge.
Could it be the design of the syncros. Engages well at high RPMs

Anyone here either old enough like me or lucky enough to know the Porsche 915 tranny?

On the 997, this 1st gear shifting issue is what I call the '915 legacy'!

If it's the syncros then should there be a fix? The dealer said it can't be fixed?

It has happened to be in all 4 911's that I have owned, the latest being a 2008 997, seems to be a Porsche thing.

The problem went away in my 997 after a few thousand miles. But there was always a bit of a 'snagging' feeling when going from 1st to 2nd.

Btw, I don't think I had this issue on the Japanese cars I had years ago. On Porsches? Well, it's one of the Porsche ownership.
Guess you don't realize the gearbox is made in Japan.

I was referring to the context of the Toyota Supra engineers and not the actual country. For all I know, the Supra engineering team consisted of Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Germans......

Have had my C2S for a month now and have hit this twice... A bit embarrassing at a traffic light!

Overall great car so far, but the gearbox certainly can't hold a candle to my old S2000.

I mostly get into 2nd and then 1st. So, I am not having problem at standstill. But, when car is moving at 8 ~ 12mph, I can not get into 1st even though I rev-match it. Is this normal? Am I just bad at rev-matching? It make me nervous whenever I am slowing down at traffic light and it just changed to green.

Wife experienced this in hers as well. Another reason she's done with Porsche manuals. It wasn't a BAD issue. Just annoying as hell to her whenever it didn't work normally. For a daily driver, stopping is something that happens, eventually. So starting became annoying for her.

+1. I've tried the "shift to 2nd and then back to 1st" trick. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The "clutch again" trick works everytime though.

Comparing it to my 10 year old Acura (demoted to winter beater now), I've never had shifting problems with the Acura. HOWEVER, the Acura gearbox feels like a toy compared to the Porsche.

Oh yeah, wait till you experience the "5th gear grinding when cold" issue! These Porsche manual transmissions are strange indeed!
