Interior rattles and creaks - any solutions?
Interior rattles and creaks - any solutions?
Having just bought a new car (2011 M3) that is tight and rattle-free has highlighted for me the fact that my 2006 997 C2S does have a few interior rattles, squeaks and creaks. Nothing major, but noticeable and a stark contrast to the bank vault-tight M3. There are a few of them and they're hard to pinpoint so it's not a single thing to just chase down and fix. My experience with rattles is that dealers don't care too much and won't invest a lot of time trying to really track them down and I'm not very good at DIY rattle hunting. Was wondering if there might be specialized businesses (e.g., like dent removal places, car detailers) that are good at hunting down rattles and fixing them. Seems like a skill that could get specialized and where someone who does it all day could get quite good. Does this exist? Anyone in Ohio? Any other thoughts?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Ask your local car audio shop. I own an audio shop and we get asked all the time to find rattles. We are always dissassembling cars and putting them back together so it's just a matter of driving the car and having someone else in there to pinpoint where the rattle is coming from. Once you find it, it's usally a loose bolt, cracked clip or a panel rattling against metal we usually use sound deadening material in that area to alleviate the problem. Good Luck.
Mine definitely gets worse when the sunroof is open. Did you push on the roof liner itself or the plastic trim holding it on? I would like to "fix" this issue as well.

i had sort of the same sound coming from rear edge of sunroof and only when it was open. i simply pushed up (firmly) on that area years ago and it hasnt returned. who the hell knows, maybe i bent the metal enough where it wasnt rattling anymore or maybe i bent it back into place. at least i "fixed" it.

i think i pushed up (and pulled too maybe?) on the liner that is just aft of the sunroof. it seems there is a thin metal brace that spans behind the opening and that was prob the rattle cause. good luck.

Appreciate all the advice - thanks!
Next time car is in for service have them lube spray the rear suspension bushings. On my 06 this is 90% of everything I hear that I don't like. As for comparing the tightness of a new car to an 5+ yo car....cmon.
Gpjli - thanks for the tip on the rear suspension bushings. I'll do that. Please note that I am not making a value judgment in comparing a new and a 5 yr old car - just observing that the contrast between the two is the impetus for trying to improve the 997. This does not take anything away from how I feel about my 997 - I love the car.
Hey, I like new Mcars too. Just not as much as my 997
Neway if you are referencing the creaks, groans and hard to place rattles that were making feel like I needed a new car you will be amazed at how much of it is the rear suspension/bushes. They can be replaced but a good lubing goes a long way. My car is impressively quiet now at 30K miles.
