Hateration - Vandalised 2X Already!
IMO, the rep point system makes sense in theory, but is questionable in practice. It seems to foster a preoccupation with status/popularity, which can hinder free expression of ideas and opinions (trying too hard to please, fearing sanction too much). And without rep points, we would still have moderators around to keep things in line.
I participate in another car forum (MBWorld) which doesn't have rep points, and the atmosphere there seems more relaxed, while still allowing for intense debate. And actually, even in 6speed, in the politics section there's an unwritten rule that you don't give neg reps just because you disagree with someone, and I don't think it's a coincidence that the politics section is less uptight than the 997 section. Anyone in favor of having the same unwritten rule in the 997 section?

Or perhaps watch the M3 thread attack the E90 thread and vice versa. Or both attack the E82 thread for being a "poser" BMW. Or how the new 1M isn't really an M car. You get the idea.So in general I think that 6Speed members are in a class of their own.
haha....you are right about that. The Chicago Audi club was the worst bunch of ****** bags I've ever seen and the BMW forum was a runner up second. I've said it before that Car forum's aren't really good places to make friends but you can learn a lot about your car and get decent information about car upgrades. I have noticed that this forum is very pleasant especially when folks ask for opinions. e90Post and Audi would rip a guy apart for asking a simple question about their car or a product especially if they didn't seem to search it first.
I like this forum and it is the best for me so far.

Actually I think 6Speed is a pretty mellow and friendly forum with lots of good advice and very few egos. Now if you want to see uptight people, try b*mmerpost.com. All they do is attack one another. Want to start a fight there? Try stating that as wonderful as the new 1M is, it still isn't in the same league as a 997.

Sorry to hear about the cigarette butt. Hopefully that was a random, not premeditated, act of a drunk person. Still, I'm sure it felt like a violation and I know it would be hard for me to just shrug it off.
I skipped a couple of pages of posts, so not sure if I'm duplicating someone else's content...but...my "S" broke in half as well. I have no idea how it happened and the paint was fine / no other damage. Being a glass-half-full guy, I used it as an "opportunity" to replace it with a red "S" from bumperplugs.com. FWIW - I am very happy with the result.
Here's hoping that the unfortunate events end with the broken "S".

I know what you mean with the BMW forums. It's as though they really want/need to believe they have the best car on the planet, but deep down they worry that there may indeed be something better out there. Porsche guys have no need for that insecurity because Porsche is the bomb. And MB C63 guys are plain happy to have a German muscle car with a touch of class.

Is stuff like this that gives the Porsche owners a bad rap. It’s like you’re saying the BMW guy can't afford a Porsche. It's why we as Porsche owners are often labelled snobs and dic*heads as a group.
People buy cars for different reasons and to rope all types of buyers in one category is wrong.
Its like saying PDK or cab owners are less of an enthusiast than a 6 speed coupe owner.
The OP was a target of vandalism. Sux for sure. And its a shame the person was not caught. Fix the car, try to protect it if possible and then drive the hell out of it and remember why you bought it.
Absolutely.
I was considering buying an Audi A3 over a VW Golf because I like the look of the back end better.. pure and simple. Now I wont, because Audi USA refuses to import A3's with a TDI and manual gearbox into the US. So the VW Golf is it. That decision has nothing to do with either car being better or best at anything and all to do with the features, functions and aesthetics that I, and only I, like.

Also, it's not just about how BMW guys feel about other brands. As Lacrosse noted, in the BMW forums there are people who champion a particular BMW model to the extent of crapping on other BMW models. If you haven't been there, lurk in one of their forums and you'll get some good entertainment.

and I disagree with buckwheat. Many really do think that they drive around the absolute best car in the world because of the m3's 50/50 weight distribution, high revving engine, and backseats. True story. Go and look. I promise you will find everything Manifold and I are saying. It's just an ugly truth.
This has for sure become an interesting thread.
What you said is so true! They call m3's without the competition package a m3 civic. They have wild arguments about dct vs. mt, how the e90 sedan is not a true m3 but the convertible is, and they get butt hurt when people tell them that their m3 isn't a status symbol (which it isn't. m3's, 911s, and SL are a dime a dozen here in LA). You have to break the 150k mark to impress anyone here. And Ryan Amico is their god, and they go to him for their purchases. But they continue to live in their little fantasy world. It is very entertaining to watch.

I said nothing about the m3.
I spoke about classifying forums members in one category. Is it really correct to believe that BMW forum members think they have the best car and WORRY they don't? And we are so much smarter because we bought porches.
The need to pinch others IMHO shows who's really insecure and second guessing their decision.
BTW, I have owned several BMW's in the past. Including 2 Z4's. Would love to get my hands on a Z4M coupe in the future.
I said it's "as though" they worry about there being better cars out there to indicate that I was speculating on the reason for their behavior. Maybe I'm right, maybe wrong. But clearly something is bugging them and making them act that way. Do you have an alternate explanation?
Oh, and I've owned a BMW in the past and own one now, so I'm no BMW hater.
Edit: Just occurred to me that this discussion perfectly illustrates my point about people being uptight in the 997 section. What irony!

Holy cow, I don't know where you're trying to go with this. I think you've read a lot into what I said, and thereby totally misunderstood me. For example, I never said anything about what people can afford, yet you immediately jumped to that point. Please go back and re-read my message and the message I responded to.

And if its not because of the money its the second point I brought up. We are so much smarter buying a porsche. Not matter which one... its a dig on them.
This ownership attitude is one that some Porsche drivers believe is a reason we are target for random acts of vandalism.
Also...I do have an explanation. They have the same passion you have for your car.
Edit...not uptight at all. Just telling it as I see it.

I brought up money because you made it sound like the BMW guys were not porsche guys. They were below the porsche owner.

I don't doubt their passion being comparable to ours (maybe greater), but that still doesn't explain their greater level of acrimony. There's something else going on there ...Edit: And I think a better explanation for Porsche hateration (haterizationing?) is that Porsches are pretty darned expensive!

back on topic: i don't give neg reps just for disagree. I fully disapprove of the post and the reasoning behind it, especially for those that make a deal over something that can be easily brushed off. i certainly don't want to hinder free expression as you said, but i think with that same token, giving a neg rep point is a freedom of expression.
