PCA DE - minimum tire standards?
PCA DE - minimum tire standards?
I've got a set of rear tires (PS2s) that are *just* down to the wear bars on the inside. I think there's plenty of tire left for one track day if I check them before each run, but I'm wondering if anyone here knows what the PCA standards are for tires?
Of course I can take it to the pre-tech inspection next week, but would love to get a head start so I can decide whether to buy new tires or skip the track day. I've been reading the latest ongoing tire thread, and I'm not quite ready to make a decision yet on tires!

I've heard of guys buying tires down to the wear bars specifically for the track. If you can pick up tires cheap with a little tread left then they probably make great tires for the track. I don't know if its a good idea or not but your track day costs go down.
PCA DE are chaotic and rules differ from region to region. check with your region tech chair on what do they enforce.
a lot of people shave r-comps to remove any tread from tires. i have no idea if anybody ever checked how much tread is left on street tires during tech.

The official tire standard for the Rocky Mtn Region is 1/16th of an inch for street tires so you could measure yours to be sure. I seem to remember that wear bars are flush at 3/32nds but perhaps that varies by tire too. I doubt if tech will give you a problem as long as they are evenly worn; probably just a reasonable warning to keep an eye out that they don't cord during one of the sessions and to be careful if it rains. They probably would be quite slick in the wet. Have fun!
PCA usually require tech inspection by an authorized shop. The rules are pretty strict so make sure you follow. Most DE in Norcal actually require 4/32 tread. Blow out on a track would be detrimental. I'm not sure if I would go with worn street tires. Track tire is a different matter.
