So it is between a Bmw diesel X5, Mercedes m350 or a ???? minivan. (maybe a volvo station wagon due to the raves)
Which are the best minivans?
Any thoughts?

Honda Odyssey for driveability, handling and all around feel.
Toyota Sienna for quiet and all-wheel drive if you need that.

Get the x5 or cayenne. We had an x5 for our first child (up to 3 kids now) and still have the x5 and a new honda pilot (needed the third row.) A minivan is great for a road trip car but tooling around on a daily basis in a minivan gets a bit old.
