Has anyone actually proven the mods we do make more HP?
$8000 got me 6 seconds faster at Sebring, and maybe .2 to .3 on 0-60. The next year a few driving lessons from Ron Zitska got me another 10 seconds faster. So, depending upon what you want to do, it is a no brainer.
I bought a '06 C4. Not cheap, but all that I could afford. A turbo was $50k more. After a couple of years of use, I spent a small fraction of the factory turbo cost and got a TPC turbo and a tweaked suspension. If I was going to trade in the car the turbo would have been a terrible investment. But I have no desire to sell the car. The changes have transformed the car and I'm all grins every time I drive it. No regrets. Just remember... if you're going to trade in your car for another new one in the short to medium term, don't bother with mods, you're throwing away most of the investment. If you're holding on to it long term, do what makes you happy. It my case, I thought the TPC turbo was the most practical approach to a faster car and have no regrets.
Under normal market conditions I'd have thought that the price difference was not that great. An 06 3.6L C4 to a 06 3.8L TT I'd think would not be $50k more (all other equipment being relatively the same). Thats the price difference between a brand new car, and the TT comes with a bunch of additional add-ons.
So yeah, if you are buying new, don't need the other standard stuff the TT comes with, and can get to most of the benefit you want (Today's C4 produces 345hp, the TT 500hp) and as you said, will keep the car for a long long time, then installing the turbo is likely the better option.
I opted against the Targa 4S because I did not want some of the things the S version comes with that you cannot deselect.
