Auto Gallery is about 10 miles from Sherman Oaks. Ask for Arman in Porsche service and see if Jim will inspect the car. I suspect as it's a Porsche dealer, the PPI won't be cheap.

A fair price..is whatever you think the buyer will take before he sells it to someone else for more than your offer.

dumb question but did Tip's really require PPI? I know it's not really needed with PDK.

Other things aside, wife has an '08 S with a Tip and it is awesome. If your DD and somewhere with traffic, and you have the dough, heck yes. BTW, Beverly Hills did our CPO inspection--and sucked. Nothing major, but they ignored some obvious things, however easily remedied...

How about this 05 C2? Are they miles too high? Looks good, might need to look into it further? Here is the link http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...20612782&Log=0

I think the statement 'if you have the dough' is the key point, and I do agree with you. For me, I had a finite budget I was willing to spend to add a 4th car in my driveway. $60K-$70K, with a preference to spend as close to $60K as possible. I was willing to trade off an S for the 'right' priced and optioned car. In no way am I dismissing the kick in the pants an S offers even in Tip or PDK form, however, for me I found a car (in my order of priorities) that was #1) CPO, #2) PDK, #3) Nav, #4) Lower Mileage #5) Competitively priced. All other options were simply nice to haves including an S and Convertible.

BTW, regarding PPI, I saw Armen this morning at Super Car Sunday and asked his opinions on PPI. He said Auto Gallery performs PPIs and recommends them even for PDK cars due to the ability to mask damage. They charge $360 for the same inspection they perform for CPO. Judging by the interactions I have had with them, I'd bet they would do a complete job.

5-10K additional mileage wouldn't make much a difference to me especially since this particular seller has done the smart thing by offering the car with fresh brakes/tires, and I tend to keep my cars for a long time. I like the options on the car - curious about his aftermarket ipod install. Don't know much about 05's and if this was even a factory option as in later 997's.

OP's stated budget was less, but regardless, I'd pass on this one.

I agree. Got my 07 4S last year with 18k and got it for 61k.

What someone else has done, or what they think, really doesn't matter for you. If you can't find something in Texas, which is a surprise as there seem to be more Porsches for sale there than in most states, then have them provide you with the highest quality photos of the entire exterior and interior and inspect them. If the car meets your requirements, not someone elses, go visit it. If it works for you, have it inspected. If that works out, buy it and drive it home.

You can do a national craigslist search and find every car in your specs available. That, ebay and several other used car outlet are available on line. But again, there are many many great Porsches for sale in Texas. Not too many in Colorado.

This forum is great! Lots of info! I don't know how some of you find some really good deals. I have searching for for 2 1/2 months emailed many dealers with no luck. They seem to move lots of 05-06 997 at very high prices. Some even in the mid $50k.
They all act as if they have the last coca cola in the desert! Well I'll just keep searching. The 911 in Newport beach, CA might be worth looking into. I just don't want to waste too much $$ on several PPI's before I find a car.

Why are so many people hung up on buying a used car from a dealer? They 'in general' know nothing about the maintenance history of the car they are selling, and primarily are focused on sales margin. How is this advantageous to the buyer?

My thoughts on your questions...

#1 Be patient. My search lasted nearly six months. I had very specific objectives in a car and I refused to compromise on what was to be my 'dream car'. When I saw the ad, I just had a feeling I had found 'it' and indeed I had once I completed all the below steps.

#2 IF you can...skip the dealers except to test drive cars. Certainly talk to them about their inventory and prices but in my 'pre owned' p car shopping experience, I never found a better deal on a dealer's lot than in someone's driveway.

#3 When looking into private party sale - focus on CPO cars. You will know right off the bat what you are dealing with by talking direct to the owner, and having that piece of mind of a CPO is just priceless. Request all records, and materials to see how well/not well the car has been taken care of.

#4 Get tons of hi res photos inside and out, top to bottom.

#5 Go back to the dealer with the VIN to get a print out of the vehicle build sheet. A good check against what the seller is claiming about the vehicle.

#6 When you are satisfied, get a PPI. If you've gotten to #6, you're gonna buy the car if it checks out with the shop - you won't be doing several PPI's if you've found the right car.

You are right about a private owner sale. I like the 06 C2S in sherman oaks, just out of my budget. I am going to look into the C2 in newport, looks intresting, and the owner says it has all it's scheduled maintenance. Miles seem reasonable.

I spent the majority of my time on ebay and cars.com to get a good idea of what the market for used p cars was like. Here is a link from cars.com.
