To "S" or not to "S"?
Is this your first Porsche? If yes you're going to love whatever you pick... I have no regrets whatsoever with my C2 - it's an engineering masterpiece, and if you appreciate the beauty of these cars then you will feel the same way when you find 'the one'. Also not a common car in my area so whether it's a 2/S/4/4S, friends, neighbors and strangers will drool, give you the thumbs up, smile, etc. I've wanted a Porsche since I was 12 years old and having fulfilled this dream is a totally amazing feeling
If there are certain options or features you can't live without that you can't get on the C2 etc... or if it will haunt you wondering whether you should have just bitten the bullet and gotten the next step up, then I'd encourage you to go for it!

- 3.8l engine vs the 3.6l engine (= more HP, though I argue that gain is never used in normal road driving, only on the track does it come to play)
- possibly bigger std brakes to match the power bump.
Beyond that, you get some things standard that the non-s can buy as an option. If they are all things you would option anyway, then it may make sense to get the S. For me there were things I absolutely did NOT want and so the S was even less attractive beyond the needlessly bigger motor for my use. I, for example, had zero desire for 19" wheels, or the slightly increased fuel consumption for power I'd never put to use.
