oil plug crush ring
i've reused mine but only once. i dont see the problem with once but as i've learned in the past (read: i'm an idiot and have proven it over and over again), it's better to follow porsche's recommendations more often than not.
try suncoast, i never have a problem when i order them.

I'll reuse a crush washer, but if it is the ring I believe they are designed to be used once.
Don t know, trying to get everything needed for first oil change.
It doesn't look like copper, more like aluminum.

reuse it. It'll be fine if used a second time. I do it all the time and have never had one leak.

Pelican called back and I ordered filter and ring. On the 997.2 my oil filter is on top under back cap type filter holder. Question/ I don t see why I can t just use a 36mm socket to remove from the center nut. The porsche tool covers the whole piece to remove. I do this on my chevy which has the same type filter. On my mercedes I used a band tool as there was enough room and this also has that type filter housing. Thanks.
I actually should have asked if it has a ridge on it that crushes when you use it.
If so those are designed to help you not over torque the drain plug. They aren't really to keep it from leaking.

I got the dealers answer that it s a 36MM also to remove the filter housing. 8mm allen for the drain plug. My confusion was coming from reading about special filter tools which are applicable on the 997 not the 997.2.... The first time is always the toughest. maybe I ll do a DYI with pics when I do the oil and brake fluid on the 997.2. Thanks all.
The ring should not be reused.
For a used ring, if the side that has a ridge (from the the previous use) is placed against the oil sump drain plug hole's sealing surface will damage this critical sealing surface and the next time even if you use a new ring oil can seep past the sealing ring from this damage. Some more torque might be used and then the drain plug threads or drain plug hole threads are stripped. All for the lack of renewing this critical sealing ring.
If the ridge is facing out the risk is the drain plug may not fall back into position and the plug is ****ed, part of the drain plug is on the ridge, part is off the ridge.
This too can leak and more torque can only put the threads at risk. More torque can also cause the quite hard ring to break.
If this happens a seep is the best thing that can result. If the ring breaks the drain plug can come loose and if it falls out...
Sure many reuse these but they are playing with fire.
Visit a local Porsche dealer parts counter and buy a dozen if you can't get other places to supply you with the right parts to do a correct oil/filter service. The rings cost less than $2 each (less last time I bought some) for crying out loud. Not like having some spares on hand will break the bank.
While you're there, buy a spare drain plug too, just in case. Carry it in the car.
Sincerely,
Macster.
