Tread Wear: Front v Rear
Tread Wear: Front v Rear
I just noticed this weekend that my rear tires are in need of replacement but the fronts are about 50%. This generates a few questions, but first and foremost is: WHY are the rears wearing so much faster than the fronts? Is it because all the weight is over the rear?
- I don't track my car
- 8000 miles
- Air Pressures are manually checked weekly and adjusted if needed: 37F, 40R
- If the tread wear suggests anything, it's overinflation (on the rears) as the wear is even across the entire width of the tire to the edges. But per Porsche specs, the rears are to be at 44psi (cold), and I keep mine lower than that
So what gives? Why would the rears wear down so fast? I do like to put some speed into driving every once in a while, but I've NEVER burned any patches with it (I'd probably burn out my clutch before I burn out my tires).
Any thoughts is appreciated so I don't repeat this situation with the next set.
And for what it's worth: I'll be replacing them soon, but not with OEM Pirellis. I've read all of the threads regarding mixing of tires, yada yada. Not sure I believe or care. I'm not going to throw away a perfectly decent pair of tires due to conjecture and lacking any hard evidence as justification. I'm seriously considering replacing with the Hankooks on the rear as they're so inexpensive and when it does come time to replace the fronts I'll consider replacing those with Hankooks or simply replacing the entire set with MPSSs. I've read the threads about Hankooks feeling flighty and will keep that in mind, but my driving habits don't necessarily warrant concerns about driving feel over 100mph.

Perfectly normal for a 911. On a Turbo you go thru three sets of rears to one set of fronts. Is your wear for the most part even across the tread? This is the best indicator of misalignment. You rears will wear as mirror images of each other, while the fronts tend to wear more evenly.
All of the abve does not apply if you run more camber than the stock amounts.
In the 2012 owners annual it calls for 34/37 F/R on my GTS with 19 inch wheels.

Thanks. My previous 911 picked up a nasty nail about 6 months into ownership, and then I traded it another 6 months later, so I never had it long enough to pick up more experience with the tread wear. My Boxster and Panamera had perfect front/rear wear though, but both of those have better front/rear balance.
