Torn between what to buy
Torn between what to buy
Hi all,
I am really needing a lot of help here.
In a nutshell, I have a limit of about 70k to spend on a newer car.
I currently own a 03 996 C2
I am in the market for newer, better, faster and sexier!
I have a 997.1 GT3 on my mind, 09 Z06, 09 GTR and a 08 AM V8 Vantage
All of these cars are within my range. I have tested the GT3 and Z06
Both blew my mind, they each bring something different to the table.
I am buying in the next few months, and I have lost too much sleep over this.
I want to stay true to Porsche, but the GTR and AM could sway me...maybe
I dont plan on tracking too often.
What scares me is the cost of ownership on the AM..
Any thoughts?
Any questions will be humbly answered
Thank you and Happy Fathers Day!

I wanted an AM Vantage badly too, but after doing a lot of research on the web decided to stick with Porsche. The AM's just cost too much to fix if something goes bad with it. The oil changes are more and the cost of ownership as you mention is just too much.
I figure I will get an AM down the road when I can baby it and limit the miles I put on it each year.
I would consider a GTR though. They are pretty sweet. The ride is pretty rough for a daily driver though. The Porsche I think has a more prestigious name. Not sure which car would get more looks though.

Get the GT3 if you want to feel connected to the car and have great handling. Small draw backs are less sound deadening and also no back seats. Get the Z06 if you want raw power and don't mind the interior. Get the GTR if you're going to be sitting in traffic quite a bit and also need/want the 4 wheel drive. Keep in mind the GTR is a tank...
I'd steer clear of the Aston since it doesn't stand up to your other options in terms of performance.

I consiered the same cars when I bought (except for the AM) and after my reasearch found for 70K you can get a real low mileage, CPO, 2009 C2S.
Z06 s are way to common for me with tons on the road.
If is a DD then fuel mileage will also be best in the porsche (if it matters to you).
Porsche has been nice and easy to do general maintainance, parts easy to get.

The GTR just seems to civilized from what other members say about it on here.
Plus I give up the feel of a stick shift for it, which I don't like.
Their isnt many Z06's here where I live, I liked the car because it was fun to drive and interior on the 09+ is decent with CF added.
A C2S would be nice, but I want more, an added GT3 aerokit would pique my interest actually.
I am going to be looking at a used 09 GTR today. So when I return I will write down my thoughts

Haha, I just noticed where you live... Strike out the Z06 comment then.
And as far as what 70K will buy I guess my advise might to pertain to you. Don t know the market in Germany.

In Germany I bet something like the Z06 would actually have more appeal than it would here in the States where you could see one every day. I don't know that I'd want a GT3 if I wasn't planning on tracking the car. The GTR is fast as all get out but it feels and looks huge (a friend has one, though I haven't driven it). I honestly don't know much about AM but it isn't really a car that I desire.
I'd try and find a 997.2 C2S for that $70K price, but since that isn't on your list, I'd go GT3 and make sure you tracked it every once and awhile!

At the moment I am in Denver actually. I am on vacation for a few weeks, I bought my 996 in Beverly Hills and shipped it to Germany.
I plan on doing the same with the next car.
I will be doing all of my own maintenance, I am pretty familiar with my 996.
I did most of the major work, besides the camshaft position sensor that failed
The Z06 would be more appealing over here, but I am not going to be here for long.
So all in all..the states is my home. Colorado Springs to be more exact.
I have a DD there just in case I do get a GT3 or Z06

Well you said you want to be Porsche loyal... Gt3, turbo or C2S...
Unless Nissian or chevy is your new home . Probably can t go wrong with any thing you ve narrowed it down to. Also Z06 s are and will be taking heavy depreciations, not sure about GTR s.... On the other hand 997 s have been doing fairly well in holding some value.

Well today I was definitely impressed by the GTR. Good raw power, great handling and space. But it felt like a boat to drive for some reason.
cerbomark I do want to stay loyal to Porsche.
All in all I still think its going to be tough. I wish R8's would drop more into my range :P
haha
At the moment it looks like either a GT3 or for a few thousand more the 997 Turbo

Love the GT3 but I don't track enough to justify one and no rear seats, big no no for me as I take my kids to school in the Porsche. So I got one with a GT3 body kit, best of all worlds.
Z06, extremely fast, great price but like you already know since you are in Colorado, you can't go a mile without seeing one or two or three in row if you live in Littleton like me. Since you spend most of your time inside, I could not live with the plastic interior.
I respect the GTR for what it is, it is a beast. But I am not ready for an automatic, whether it's PDK, SMG, F1, etc. Now if it was manual, GTR would be way up my list. The Porsche is still a weekend car for me. I drive my MDX and minivan 80% of the time. I will not get into another automatic no matter how fast it shifts.
The AM V8V was actually my first choice over the Porsche. But when I add up all the pros and cons, the only thing pro the AM has over the Porsche was looks. That was not enough to get me in an AM.

Wow - taking a US Spec car and shipping it to Germany? You are hard core. When I was duty stationed in the UK, it was a PAIN to get my US Spec VW GTi to pass UK MOT. Rear fogs? Nope. Side Indicators? Nope. Properly angled headlights? Nope Nope. I would suspect Germany would be just as strict. At least you'll have the steering wheel on the proper side.

They arent very strict. Just on sound for the most part
