Brake Pads Recommendation
Brake Pads Recommendation
I was told by a tech inspector at an AutoX a couple of weeks ago that my FRONT brake pads will need to be replaced soon. I am planning on participating a few AutoX's and a few DE's a year. Could you guys recommend type of brake pads that would be good for both street and track use? And if I am replacing the pads with non-OEM pads, do I have to replace both front and rear at the same time?
For the amount of AutoX and DE's you do I would recommend staying stock. I've run stock (on 997.1 and 991S) at majority of my track days (including these past 2 days at Limerock with PCA Metro
. Stock is strong and easy on rotors.
BUT, That's not to say I don't love the Pagids. The confidence to brake deep and hard for a full session with those pads is unsurpassed IMHO but they are loud as all getup on the streets and that's no fun. I ran them for a season and loved every minute on track but around the streets of NYC I felt I was attracting too much negative attention.
If Pagid can find a way to keep these pads silent at lower temps (street) I'd run nothing else. Changing pads on 991 isn't so easy trackside (for me anyway) so I'm juts running OEM and changing them more often (but prolonging rotor life too).
Others may know of less aggressive pads to recommend but I am very satisfied with the OEM. It was hot and humid today at Limerock and the pads held up nicely. In my case, the rears are being worn much quicker than the fronts. I suspect this is from the PTV+ constantly braking the inner rear wheel under track conditions.
1 last thing. A fresh brake flush with a high quality fluid goes a long way.

+1 for keeping OE for occasional DE pads. They stop the car just fine in pretty much any condition. The only real issue is added pad wear at higher temps and lots of dust. But they are cheap and quiet.
I don't swap pads for events anymore (10-15 events a year) so I wake up the whole neighborhood with my Pagid's when I leave for a DE at 5AM...
Unless you have a DE addiction problem and are a complete track rat, I would say it's not worth the hassle for now, but if my experience holds true, you'll get there shortly... So enjoy the quiet pads while you can!
