Oil Pressure Gage Question

Can someone tell me if it is normal to have the gage all the way up to 5 at idle speed when engine oil and water temp is up to temp (water temp-175 / oil temp-200). I have seen it drop around 2-3, but sometimes is all the way up to 5. Is this normal?

I don't think the oil pressure gauge should read that high when the oil is fully warmed-up. There is probably something wrong with the gauge cluster or your oil pressure sending unit.

997.1. MY 2005. I agree. The problem is that sometimes it reads between 2-3, but some other times it reads all the way up at 5. Not sure why?

The problem is that sometimes the gage reads between 2-3 and some other times reads 5. Gage going bad? Maybe the module?

I've had a similar problem in the past and it traced back to a bad ground.

Could be that the cable on the oil pressure sender is starting to get loose

I've had this happen occasionally when I'm on the high side of the oil level. Once the temp era a little hotter it should drop.

Mine has never read 5 at idle so I suspect the gauge or sending unit or whatever is going bad. Not sure if it would throw a code but would be worth checking.

As a data point for you, my previous '08 C2S almost always ran around 5 and sometimes, at idle, around 3-ish. It was never a problem and Porsche Techs were unconcerned (whatever that is worth). I'm not stating this as a fact because I read it elsewhere on the topic of oil pressures in the 997.1 v. 997.2 (any corrections appreciated as my memory may not be that great) but there is one oil pump in the 997.1 so the pressure will run high because the it is always "on". In the 997.2, which I currently have the pressure seldom ever gets above 3. It was also in something that I read that this is due to the fact that in the DFI engines, oil pressures are managed differently (more than 1 pump I think?). I don't know if any of this is correct but it would be nice to hear from people who know more facts than I do.

Mine typically reads high as well at 5 or just below. Can someone clarify the differences in 997.1, 997.2, etc? What does the number after the decimal represent? I have an 07 Carrera...what would that be?

Mine is almost always at 5. It was a concern for me but read that is the norm.

997.1 is from 2005- 2008.
997.2 is from 2009-2012

The .2 models have a DFI engine with increased power and the loss of the controversial IMS. Also, improvements in the PCM and PASM systems. I'm sure someone can chime in and explain in more detail but that's a quick breakdown.
