new vibration at speed
A good road force balance will help determine if there is lateral runout on the wheel, too. The units have dial indicators on them to test for wobble. www.gsp9700.com. That's the first step.

Can someone explain to me in layman's terms what constitutes a 'good road force balance' please (so I now what I'm talking about when I take it to the shop).
thanks
thanks
It s a machine that they put the tire and rim on and spins it like a balancing machine and also has a pressure point which simulates where the tire meets the road. It can tell if a tire is flat spotted, they can see if the rim is true and it can show other issues with a tire. It s a fast test and not a big deal.
A Hunter 9700 Road Force balance machine is the best of the balance world, especially with off-roading and the large size tires that are often fitted! It can make all the difference in the world!
It's easy to bend that wheel with no visible damage. If you don't fix it soon, you'll spin a bearing...ending in the same symptom--vibration at speed. Then you'll have to replace wheel and bearing.
Here's the verdict from my tire shop.
They took the wheel and did a road balancing test. The rim was straight and true. However, there was a visible bump on the INSIDE edge of the tire.
A month ago, I had a slow puncture on that tire which I had fixed within 24 hours. I can only guess that the damage to the tire wall occurred during that slow puncture.
Going to the tire shop was still the right thing to do or I would not have seen/detected the damage with possibly serious consequences at speed.
Result: 1 new tire on order (better than a new rim or worse).
Thanks all for your help.

Slightly off topic, but reading about the Hunter 9700 has me wondering about my F150 tires...large 20" Nitto Terra Grapplers...my second set. KC Trends just cannot get them balanced. I get vibration at highway speed. I'm going to call up there and ask what machine they have and if they don't I'll seek one out to see what's going on. It's not horrible but definitely bugs me on longer highway runs.
EDIT...just looked on the locator and it shows they have that machine in their shop...uhhhhgh.
