Rear license plate LEDs for under $2
Seeing as every new reasonably high end car comes with LEDs for all external lighting already I don't see this attracting any more attention.
I want LED bulbs because:
1. The external incandescents look cheap IMHO - I'd prefer lights to look white, just like how I prefer clear side markers over the stock orange ones.
2. For certain interior lights I do want brighter, better lighting than comes stock (trunk comes to mind)
3. Particularly for "active" bulbs that turn on and off or have variable inputs (turn signals, brakes), I feel like the quick response of the light instantly turning on/off looks better than incandescents sort of fading in and out. Incandescents do not do that intentionally, it's a side effect of their high inductance.
If you select compatible bulbs, LEDs will by far outlast any incandescent, I don't expect to have any burn out in the time that I own this car.
Really don't get the "you don't see it so why do you care" argument. I also don't see my wheels, my spoiler, my front bumper... for that matter 90% of the car's exterior when I'm driving. I'm sure if you bought a 911 that came with a cheap looking "BIG AL'S DISCOUNT CARS" license plate frame you'd rip that off in a hurry - same thing.
There are no mechanical advantages worth noticing. Technically the lights will be a bit brighter, more directional, should draw less energy, but the scale of these things are too small to make a difference when retrofitted onto an existing car.

If most people do go above the speed and you are in a pack then your license plate is not an issue.
As far as the age, well I picture a teenager in a souped up civic burning through the revs. A P owner on the contrary is no racer but a wise driver!

Goes fast in moderation, not a nonstop redline kisser

I emailed the local component manufacture distributor guy, and he told me he had seen those, he is going to send me a quote later today or Monday for 3 pair of the 42mm, 2 for the licenses plate, 1x engine compartment lid, 1x luggage compartment, 1x front dome) and 3 pairs of the wedge one (2x footwell, 2X doors, 2x front dome).
I'll update this thread with whatever he tells me, he said he is confident that the whole set should be below $50 (and shipped from the US)
Please let me know how they turn out. The ones I got I'm starting to feel are a little bit on the blue side (~5500k) and I just want crisp white like on the back of a Lexus (4300k).
This will make it basically as bright as any other car with OEM LEDs on the back. Every BMW, MB, new Porsche, Lexus, heck even Minis and Acuras. We are not talking about retina-searing HID brightness.
ebay have them for $7ish shipped from the US (Massachusetts, United States)

Do search on fleabay, theres a seller that has 10 pieces for like 7.98
I just put the license plate ones in, they look great now but I'll have to wait until dark to really look. I normally don't like led's in tail lights and such, but a brighter interior light would be nice. Sometimes you need to find things in the car without a flashlight. I'll probably get the led lights for the trunk and interior too.
My light pack just arrived. Just in time to do the install over the long weekend. Will let you know how it goes. Incidentally came with a 15% off coupon if you order direct from there website www.carhidkits.com. Coupon code is CARHIDDEAL

man, awesome hookup link there, coupon code too! I was about to order the white until I saw the red, blue and amber options too. So I got blue, what the heck, if I don't like it I'm only out a few bucks. But it looks too cool and will still be better lighting than stock for the interior. Thanks for the leads and for this thread.
I got plate lights in was more of a struggle than I thought it would be. They look nice replacing old yellow light with a nice clean white light.
Then I decided to do passenger footwell. I got light out but it is a type of semi sealed unit. The design is such that I think you are meant to replace the whole light rather than just a bulb. I think this main difference between this kit and a suncoast style kit. In suncoast you appear to get the whole light unit if you go off there light change instructions.
See here for examples of this type of light http://www.ebay.com/itm/LED-Under-Do...50984686930%26
Will take a closer look tomorrow and report back. But bearing in mind there are three of these would explain high cost ok kits normally
