997 - Break Fluid Boiled.. Help
I took my 2006 911 (not an S) to the track for it's first time. On my 3rd 20 minute session of the day it ended with me boiling my break fluid. I was driving the car extremely hard the last session.
My thinking is to replace the break fluid but a mechanic was telling me he thinks it has to do with my breaks and that OEM break fluid should be fine. He thinks my breaks could be glazed or low quality aftermarket breaks that led to me eventually boiling the break fluid because the hydraulic system has to work harder. I bought my car used 2 yrs ago so I do not know. I'm not car expert, but I was curious on your take about it being more a break pad issue?
My second question is if I do track 4x a year and use my car as a daily driver, what kind of break pads would you recommend? A friend recommended carbotech 1521... thoughts?

If you are running factory fluid and havent changed it since you owned the car I would look at that as the first thing to change.
As far as pads its going to depend on exactly what type of track days you are doing and how much you want to deal with noise/dust.

Yes...this is key...when was it last flushed or better yet changed.
I dont agree with you mechanic that the stock fluid is good enough. Most people who DE their cars move up to Motul or ATE Blue at least.

I had the same thing. Brake fluid absorbs the condensation associated with heating and cooling. When the brake fluid gets really hot and the fluid boils, the water condensation boils off and out of the fluid creating air pockets that eliminate the pneumatic ability of the brakes. Racing fluid boils at a higher temp and is less likely to boil off. Safest bet is to flush with racing fluid at the beginning of the track season each year.
I had it happen on my first DE on the straight away at 115 and i pumped the brakes and was able to get hem back. As I was finishing the track it felt like the brakes were functioning and as I went into a hair pin they were completely gone. I grabbed the wheel and made the turn and the car handled it easily, just scared the heck out of me!

Hey All, thanks for the reply! I'm gonna get my break fluid changed. I'd rather have the insurance... luckily when my break fluid boiled, it was a coned course (Fairplex, CA) and I was able to just continue forward running over a few cones.
Yes you can. When my lines were bled off at the track they topped with Motul. I flushed the following week with Castoil racing.
Porsche brakes should be flushed and bled every two years, starting from the date the vehicle was built. For race cars, it may be necessary to bleed the brakes before each track event or, if the pedal becomes soft during an event, to bleed between sessions. We offer the Motive Power Bleeders that make the job a little easier if your going to do it yourself.
