Angry Common Problem Areas in 997.1

The Porsche 997 has a reputation as a reasonably reliable car, at least by sports car standards. I've now had my car for about 9 months, and have spent about $2000 on various repairs, most recently cracked coils which seem to be a common problem area. I'm wondering what other issues are common to these cars, as well as the approximate repair costs, assuming the Porsche dealer does the work.

I'm not interested in the very rare kind of issues, but the common, well known, or catastrophic ones.

These are the ones I personally know of:

- The dreaded IMS failure. Rare, at least after 2005, but certainly catastrophic. Cost: Unknown (New Engine)

- Cracked coils - $1200 for a new set of 6

- RMS - $800 to $1600 for replacement depending on model

- Coolant Expansion Tank - $400 to $500 for replacement

- Water Pump - Cost?

What else gentlemen....?

Yeah, I think $100 to $300 is just for the part, isn't it? From what I've heard, the labor is pretty involved.

Guys, I'm asking about costs for parts+labor, assuming the work is done at the Porsche dealer, not DIY or Indy.

The starter cable cost me $715 (parts and labor) from a dealer.

I also had a Charcoal Filter problem and a Fuel Strainer problem...but both were covered when I was CPO. As well as a bad Coil Pack.

Battery cable cost $ 98.00
Coil packs - about $ 200 for 6 but only the cracked ones need replacing
AOS - $ 125
Shifter cable set- $ 200 to $ 250

Labor will vary but all of these parts can be replaced as a DIY projects. Some are more difficult than others but with the exception of a $ 25 cable alignment tool for the cables, none require any special tools to complete. If you don't care to do do it yourself knowing a competent Porsche repair shop can save you significant $$'s. None of these parts have failed on my 2007 C4S.

Where can I get the AOS for $125? I might just do mine now, I am not having any issues, but do you suggest I do it?

I'd try Suncoast or Sunset Porsche but I wouldn't replace it unless it was broken or you had other reasons to do the install that required the removal of similar parts to gain access. Replacing the alternator-to-starter battery cable for example.

Last night I noticed a check engine light after hitting a pothole and a few minutes later...a huge plume of white smoke coming from the exhaust. The car was towed to the shop on a flatbed this morning and was quickly diagnosed with an oil separator issue. This shop stocks this part so it is a very common issue especially with the age of my car (2007, 997.1, 65K miles). Apparently, the engine needs to be dropped to replace the oil separator for tiptronic cars.

RMS leak - $1,200 fix under warranty

Worn tie rods - at 23K miles, fixed at Indy $800 for both inner and outer tie rods, dealer quoted $1,300 for just the inner tie rod.

Besides that, car is reliable.
