Oil Question

I have a 2006 911S. I had the oil changed at 45,215. I'm at 47,050 now. I checked the oil and the bottom section is flashing. The porsche service department said it means its a quart low on oil. Is this right?

I'll let others chime in, but mine requires a quart of oil almost every 1,000 miles (the aftermarket turbo has somehting to do with that I'm sure).

From what I've read, your consumption is not unusual.

Read your owner's manual - it will tell you what the flashing light means.

8. If the bottom segment flashes, the oil level has dropped to below the minimum mark.
Add engine oil immediately.
The difference between the minimum and maximum marks on the segment display is approx. 1.3 quarts (1.25 litres).
One segment of the display corresponds to a top-up quantity of approx. 0.42 quarts (0.4 litre).

I thought when Porsche went to the water-cooled engine the oil consumption would go away, however it appears it only decreased, not disappeared.

My 2008 997 uses oil but not as much as my previous air-cooled 911's. My air-cooled 911's used an average of a quart a month, all were daily drivers going 150 to 200 miles weekly.

Some oil consumption is a function of flat 6 engine design and is unavoidable. Can't speak to reasons for no oil consumption. Mine uses about a qt. ever 1000 miles but is driven mainly sort distances which I believe contributes to consumption level.

My 997S doesn't use any oil between routine oil changes.

My consumption is pretty low but boxer engines do consume more than normal.
Same goes for Subaru & Scion

Did you check on a flat and level ground after the oil change and also check the oil level right after the change.

1. either oil is consumed
2. oil is leaking
3. not enough oil replaced at oil change

it's just a couple of ounces between the graduations on the gauge. 1.3 Qts from Low graduation to the high graduation.

That sounds about right. It will vary. No issue just add 1/2 a quart and see where you are after your next drive and top it up if you need more. I generally fill mine to right between the max/min lines.
