Sharpie

My only hesitation with using the Sharpie is if I'm not happy with how they turnout then will someone like stickynomore still be able to refinish them?

This is a common issue with early rubberized 997 controls. My 2007 997 has hard plastic heater controls, not rubberized.

I'd pull the buttons and send them here, because I'm going to assume the dealer will want to replace the entire AC control unit.

I had a button break on my PCM and there was "no way to replace the button" because the buttons were not available. New the PCM was well over $1,000, used best I could find was around $800, but a gamble. I thought that's a heck of an expensive button!!

THEN, I called Becker Audio!

$60 to fix the button, I shipped it in and they also they fixed a broken bracket for a little more and it was home for $100!!!!

They're great and the service took about a week. The trickiest part is getting the unit out, but you are only dealing with the heating and A/c controls, so it might be easier. There are DIY videos on YouTube and threads on the forum.

Good luck!!

To carry on the pun...

Literally today, my girlfriend asked me why I don't have a doorbell. I told her because guys prefer knockers.

Below is a picture of my ac control 'toggles' after the 'stickynomore' treatment. Hard plastic now vs. the rubber feel. I also replaced the PCM control *****...

I was contemplating doing a DIY project and vinyl wrapping the two toggles. Of course, this means that I'll cover up the "TEMP" and fan icons, but how hard is it to remember which is which? Anyways, with vinyl wraps being removable, there should be no issues reverting in case I don't like how things turn out.

Does anyone know how to remove the toggle buttons?

Judging by what you guys are saying the ***** are repairable, does this mean the old air conditioning control unit I have lying around is worth anything?

have you guys heard of plastidip?

my controls were peeling a bit, I sprayed it and its a good quick fix. they way it dries is rubberized/ matte also.

Im not sure what would happen if the temp/fan letterings were rubbed off but in that case i would just prefer them to be all black.

It's the Porsche 'soft look' coating they sprayed all the plastics with. It scratches very easily, I have had to replace some pieces due to this problem.

As anyone looked into buying new fan and temp toggle switches without having to buy the whole unit or get stickers that may or may not look good? Surely Porsche should stock these switches considering it is a fairly common problem with older 997. Any input would be appreciated.

No, Porsche doesn't stock the switches. I ended up paying about $700 for the dealer to swap it (they matched Suncoast's price for the unit). I didn't want to disassemble my console to ship to stickynomore. Paying for the deinstall/install, plus the refinishing added up too. The options on this thread are about it.

btw, like the sport chrono package SoCal997.

And my wife was also responsible for mine starting to peel. Kicked them several times with her feet. Don't ask...it was "date night".
