perk, are you saying the 964 will be more expensive to maintain and if so, how so and why?

and my username is just the name ive always used on car forums. its just a play on six speed, not an implication of actual velocity.

A 964 will be ~20 years old and therefore have WAY more maintenance to do on a regular AND random basis. At 20 plus years old, anything and everything could need replacement.

Even if you bought a higher end 964 for 35-40k, you would still have a 20 year old car. If that's what you are looking to do then more power to you. I have a 2006 and wish it were a 2012 (997 of course).

Here's a nice one - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...#ht_500wt_1169

Look at that motor. The old interior. That's as good as it will get for you. Now go look at a 997 and tell me you can live with a 964 on a daily basis.

Don't get me wrong. I love the 964 as much as I love most 911's but its the age and daily driver (?) thing that gets me. Unless this will be your second/third car.

i test drove the 997 c2s the same day i bought my c4s (after owning a cayman s). the c2s just seemed more fun to me. i liked the rear end sliding on the tight mountain roads. i also just didn't do my research before i bought the 4s. the 0-60 difference will never matter to me, i can't shift fast enough to make a difference. the whp loss due to the awd system hadn't occurred to me at the time of purchase. the awd system definitely has its benefits living in colorado, though, as you mentioned. i also like the look at the wider body. now that i'm getting into autocross i want the c2s. i'll probably circumvent the issue and jump to the 997.1 gt3 in a year or two.

ive driven both 964s and 997s and like both so its not a matter of liking it, its a matter of which to buy as a second car. and when i say daily driver, i really mean daily-capable and commutable. i have a short commute to work so this is possible and i have other cars too. id rather have more toys than one expensive one.

and im not sure its fair to assume that because the car is 20 years old, more stuff will need fixing. a lot has already been fixed if its still running and in good shape and its a less complicated vehicle so less to go wrong as well, in some regards.

I would love to have another air-cooled 911, but it would not be instead of my 997.

I would steer clear of the 1990, honestly if I were to get another Air-cooled I would get another 1987-1989 with the G50 Tran. I loved that car. The first year of the 964 had issues, if you do get one I would get a 92-94 model year, they worked out most of the problems by then.

Personally, I don't like the 964. I am the 930, 993, 997 guy.

Sounds as if you had already decided on the 964 prior to asking for help to do that very thing. No need to defend your decision just buy the car you want to buy and drive it in good health. Still important to get a PPI by someone very familiar with these cars prior to your purchase regardless of model number.

If you do not think it is fair to assume more will go wrong than you are not in reality. Bottom line more will go wrong because it is 20 years old. Maintenance may be cheaper if you can do it all yourself so in the end it may be a wash, but to say more will not go wrong is being naive.

Again I would stay away from the 1990 model year, probably the 1991 as well. Good luck, sounds like you have already made up your mind.

not even a comparison. I had a 993, and even that was no comparison with a 997. the 964 is an old fashioned car. great to collect or drive on a pretty day, but horrible as a daily driver. the 997 is fully modern. Perhaps not as charming, but 100% better for a daily driver.
