Winter Tires
Winter Tires
Are winter tires on a 997 only for people daily driving, in snow/rain, cold conditions? Or are they a good idea in general if I plan on driving my car at all on say 28-30 degree days??
I kind of enjoy the tail wag I get with the cooler temps, but also don't want to push it either. Today was the first time I noticed it getting "loose". But I also had put a little air in the tires, cold, before I left and the rears were at 44 lbs, outside temp around 45 degrees. NO hammering the corners without a little tail wag anymore! :-) I also don't want to do anything stupid either.
If I choose to just stick it out for the occasional cold weather drive on my PS2's, should be keeping my tire pressure down a little?

Don t forget the pressures will drop a little by themselves in the colder weather... I drive on the sports tires when there s no snow too but sometimes go out in well below freezing temps.. I just expect the car not to handle as well and drive accordingly... maybe when I need new tires I will go with something more like an all season general tire.
About Nov 1st I'll switch to my Nokian Winter Tires. Baltimore area when the temps are below 40* F.
I'll run them even if the temp gets 50-60.
I definitely notice my summer Michelins are hard and slippery below 40.
Just do it!
Be smart.

When I asked around, I was told by a few tire specialists and the local porsche dealer that porsche specific tires lose almost all traction below 40 degrees and you really do need winter tires to ride all year. It gave me an excuse to get rims for summer anyway.
ALL summer/max performance tires lose grip when temps drop below 40F, not just N-spec. No idea about your climate but if temps/precipitation permit, you may be able to use A/S tires and not need pure winter ones.
The 997.2 could possibly be different but 44# in rear is fully loaded pressure for 997.1 w/ 19". Partial load setting (more typical or everyday driving w/ one or two passenger/no luggage) is 33F/39R. Your manual will specify what you need.

Very good with my Winter Nokians! Confident driving.
I put mine in the stock wheels and used it as a good excuse to get some new rims which I use for summer. I went with Forgestar f14's on mine but that's really a personal choice based on cost/look and everyone will have different views.
