Recording in car and external audio

Anyone use a setup for recording both in-car and external (exhaust note) audio? For general use or to supplement video (e.g., autocross)?

Curious what recorder you use and what mic setup?

Initial thoughts are a Zoom H4n which can record through the internal mics for in-car audio as well as an external mic at the same time (for exhaust). This is one of the few recorder that can record from it on-board mic and external at the same time. However, there are many choices in this field and I am a bit confused, particularly when it comes to interfacing to various mic types.

Questions - (1) how would you secure the in-car recorder?

(2) alternatively, recorder can be secured in glove box and external in-car mic can be used;

(3) how would you mic the exhaust? I would not want to invest too much in this given possibility of damage (mic falling off), but was thinking about an inexpensive lavalier mic with cable run out window and taped down rear A-pillar and down the rear to above the license plate (which should provide some wind block). Potentially this mic:

This would be a good choice for in car as well if the recorder was secured in a hidden place.

makemann is infamous around these parts
The Zoom H4N is an excellent choice of audio recorder with the mount listed in the link below. (No affiliation.)

Here's how I used it:

I recorded the on-track audio with this set up and used the Zoom's mic; didn't have a need for an external mic. I mounted it to the inside of the rear window. The mic was so sensitive, you could hear me hyperventilating in my helmet.

That looks like a great mount. I will be buying one.

This opens the possibility of recording in-car with one recorder and then using a small recorder (Zoom H1) on the outside of the car with that mount (have to check the rear for candidate areas) for exterior audio, no wires.
