Red face Worth to upgrade to 997.1 from 996.1?

Hi There,

I'm visiting 6SpeedOnline for quite a long time and it has been a great helper to me on various things, so thanks a lot to all contributers in advance. I've bought my 1998 Carrera in March 2012 and using it happily so far apart some minor issues which some caused by me . As the thread title explains a bit, lately I've started to think whether I should upgrade to a 997.1 or not. Before telling me "Do a search dude, there are lots of similar topics!", my situation differs a bit so had to ask this. I live in Turkey, which is known for heavy taxes on cars (Hi to friends at Brazil!) due the thought of the government that vehicles are luxury items rather than a need (not only to super sport cars but cars in general).

I bought my 996 with a whopping $44.000 at the time and they are still available in a $40.000 range as of today. As for 997.1's, 2005 models start with a price tag of $80.000, with mostly questionable state, and 2008's can go up to $130.000 in some cases, excluding the Turbo's which are in another level of pricing . I myself didn't drive any 997.1 so far but know basically the engine and transmission (Tiptronic in my case) are more or less similar. Knowing that, the look and updated interior still catches my eyes. What I would like to ask is that, to the actual 997.1 users preferably who used 996 before, whether they would upgrade considering this price difference?

By the way, I especially mention 997.1 because 997.2 prices are again out of stratosphere compared to USA .

Thanks a lot...

It's a much better and more sophisticated car.

I agree - 997.1 is a whole step up. The real question is if you want to shell out essentially double the money for that upgrade. 996 still can perform very well - but it always depends on what your requirements are...

996 is a great car, I had alot of fun with it, not a big difference in performance but the look of 997 with the round lights was worth it for me to pay extra $ for the upgrade.

It is worth it? It depends. What do you think a 997 will give you that your current car doesn't?

IMHO, the difference between the two models would not be worth the money. But then again, your 'view' of the difference will be different from my gauge. Yes, the looks are different but is it really worth it?

I always wondered why no shop (or aftermarket parts) came up to replace those fried eggs headlights on the 996 --- I believe if these eggs were replaced, the 996 would not have its "somewhat ugly reputation".
