997 CPO Warranty ending soon, any advice?
Yup, got a whole new engine (not refurb) straight from Germany. Took the car to the dealer for a clicking sound coming from the rear/engine area of the car, long story short dealer said a piston/valve let go and had to replace the whole thing. And yes it's a 997.2.
The CPO on my 996 Turbo expired at the end of March due to mileage, otherwise it would have been good for another month.
Before it expired, I had them replace the water pump, t-stat, pressure accumulator and slave cylinder.
I combined the above with a new clutch and exhaust installation to save cost, but had planned to do the preventative items regardless.

I had it done while the CPO warranty was still in effect so that if they found a problem while the engine was out it would be covered.
M Badger...you have PM.
Were there any signs of water pump or other parts failing?
My front shocks started making noises so PCNA will cover replacement.

Anytime those piston valves go you need a new engine. Cost of ownership I guess. My piston valves are still in good shape so no new engine for me.
I paid for the replacement, which was preventative only.
There were no signs of failure. If it had failed, it would have been covered.
How can you check if the valves are in good shape? Any warning signs, before it destroys our $30k "bullet proof" engine?
Which dealership do you use?
Nice ! Now will you re-CPO the car once your current CPO ends ? Your new engine runs out of warranty when the current CPO ends.
Little tongue in check. No such thing as a " piston valve " as mentioned as being a cause of an engine replacement. Engine has pistons and valves, no piston valves. And if the posted meant to indicate it was either one or the other or both, neither issue is very common or documented problem with these engines so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Your valves are probably just fine.
Quit worrying about your engine. If you maintain the car properly it will last a long time. Best way to enjoy these cars is to drive them and spend less time reading catastrophic engine failure posts on sites like this one as. They get a great deal more attention then they deserve.
