Just picked up a 2010 997S Cabrio this past weekend. I'm really happy with it! I still have my '99 996 (I'm trying to sell it) and it's really interesting to drive the two back-to-back and experience the differences. Can't wait to take her out to her first autocross next month! Actually I may take both cars if I still have the 996 and see how the times differ.

I remember when i made that switch from my 2002 996 to a 2005 997S Launch Edition...great times..congrats!

 

Both are great cars but 997 is sexier

I had also a 996 Cab before buying my 997.2 S Cab 2. Can you tell us the difference you found between the two?

For me the 996 was way much easier to play with, it was easier to slide it , and everything could be made at slower speeds. With the 997.2 and those wide and sticky rear tires toghether with a better suspension you must take much more speed to slide the thing , taking more risks. The time my 997.2 gave more fun to drive, was when the rear tires were 90% worn, what a blast it was to play with it, even in straight line at full acceleration from stand still the rear would dance all over the place making the drive so much more pleasant and funny. Build quality and interior is better on the 997.2, looks you can´t even compare, 996 is the white socks of 911 line. Power and torque + PDK on 997.2 puts to shame the 996, huge difference. Engine/exhaust soud is also much better and sportier than on 996. I had the PSE on both cars and while on 996 I would run with PSE on 10% of the time(never liked the sound it made), with the 997.2 PSE I run 80% with it on, it makes bubles, roars and blips the 996 could only dream of. One down side of the 997.2 is that at high way speeds the cabin is noisier then 996, maybe due to those wide tires. In the end the 997.2 is a better package all together, but 996 is the bargain of the century, a lot of car for what you pay for one nowadays.

Everything you said is spot on. I still have the 996... am trying to sell it and basically alternate between the two daily. It's amazing how different they are. After driving the 997, hopping in the 996 is a much more raw experience. The clutch is heavier. The steering is heavier. I have Fabspeed mufflers on it so it's a louder idle of course, but the whole thing feels more go-carty. I might actually like the raw feel of the drive of the 996 better. Until I have to corner. Or want to accelerate quickly.

My wife sort of has the same opinion. This past weekend she drove both of them and said something like, 'if I was going on a long trip I'd definitely take the 997. But for just zipping around town doing errands, the 996 might be more fun.'

The 997S is much more of a head turner than the 996. And we don't even have to talk about the interior design. No comparison there. The chassis feels much more stiff than the 996 as well. Granted, the 996 is riding on 14 year old struts at this point. And of course I get more squeaks and rattles out of the old car.

You're right about playing around with the two on corners. The 996, which doesn't have traction control, but I can predict it pretty well and take it up to where the tires slide around a little bit and still maintain control. Lots of fun. One of my more fun experiences with the car was actually on a big, empty grass parking lot of our local minor league team, where I was able to hold a sideways slide basically forever. Lots of fun.

The 997's capabilities are so much more than the older car's, though. I took an empty cloverleaf onramp at a speed that would have been a little dramatic in the 996, but the 997 just stuck like glue. I don't know how or when the tires let go on this thing, but I don't want to me near anything solid when they do. I'm looking forward to taking it to the autocross next month.

Power. No comparison between the 997S and the 996. The 997 just goes.
One thing that surprised me was the throttle response, though. The 996 is faster responding. By quite a bit. The drive by cable really responds well to throttle blips when I'm downshifting. In the 997 I'm having to blip earlier and harder. That's probably my only disappointment on its capabilities so far. The PSE sounds great. I'd like a little more, though. I'm waiting for a used X pipe to pop up on eBay...

 

If you can, get the SW bypass for these cars, it´s the perfect combo wth PSE. I put one on mine, and the burbles and roars become more noticeble, it´s just perfect, get it
