Am I crazy? Pls talk me out of it
A year ago, I purchased 2010 997.2 C4S for a DD. It was a rough winter; bitter cold temp and all those pot holes. We both survived.
I had an opportunity to pick up 2011 Cayenne for a lease return price from my nephew with only nominal transaction fee through a dealer back in February.
Perfect, the power of Two. A "Dream" come true.
Sadly, due to downsizing on my company I no longer have a luxury to carry 2 monthly payments + insurance.
So I went to a local classic sports cars dealer to see if they would purchase or perhaps, broker my car with a modest fee.
When I was there, I saw a gorgeous 1996 993 C2 Cab with only 32K miles. A classic Yellow/blk combination with 18" Wheels. Asking price of $61.9K (I can't believe how much 993 has appreciated last 2 years). They offered me a straight trade (saving $4K on tax) with a sale's pitch of this is the 911 Classic it will maintain a better value than 997.2 in next 5-10 years.
I considered for a brief moment (notwithstanding that I was there to sell the car to reduce monthly payment).
Am I crazy even to consider this trade? The owner keep calling me while looking for a potential buyer ( I think he found a buyer for my car).
2010 C4S White / Sand Beige Full Leather; $113,895
PDK
19"Classic Wheels
Heated/Ventilated Front seats & heated Steering Wheel
sport Chrono
PCM
Bose
Much more...
$65,000, my payoff

Seems a fair trade provided the 993 is cherry. Your car will continue to drop in value. The 993, not so much. Question is, do you like the 993 enough to trade? Cabs as all season drivers is less than ideal. I'd love a mint 993, but would prefer a coupe.

IMO that would be a horrible trade, granted it's a classic but the problem with that is everything about it is very dated. Your much much better staying with your 997...

Mine is CPO until June 2016 too. I don't think it's an "equal" value as is but the owner think it's a better investment.
I did some research and found an article that drove it home for me "The buying decision for the Porsche 911 is made with 80%Heart/20% Brain"

life isn't just about investing money - it's also about enjoying it. I can think of better investments for your money than a 993 or any car for that matter

So, you feel that you should sell your car because your current employment situation makes it too tight to carry two payments? And you instead now want to essentially trade one of those payments for an 18 year old cab?
I guess you have to ask yourself if that's the financial scenario you want to live with.
I couldn't do it but to each his own.

considering the finance stuff you mentioned, I would not trade a potential low maintenance car (997) for a probably higher maintenance cost 18 years old car (993)
yes 993 are awesome. I really like old cars like a 993
maybe you don't need a cayenne, maybe a Toyota rav4 and a 993 (or 997) would do the work...
I have a 2005 matrix (aka, mini pick-up) and a 997... great combo IMO

I am confused, if you want to reduce your monthly car payments by selling one financed car, how will you do this by purchasing another car. If you plan to finance the 993, you had better find out if it can even be financed by anyone. True value insurance and financing are sometimes quite difficult for older cars. If you do get financing they will rape you on the interest rate. Porsche Credit will finance older Porsches if sold through a Porsche dealer at 15%+
