Horse power insanity.....
With the new 707 HP Dodge challenger hellcat coming out, now there's talks of another Dodge Charger 707 HP car, also Lexus is flaunting that they are coming out with a 700 HP model, so is ford with a mustang, suddenly I'm starting to feel inadequate with my 350 HP 911s, I know horsepower isn't everything, my wife has a 425 HP camaro SS that I have no problem leaving behind, but there is a big leap between 425 and 707!! Even today I get "challenged" every day by Camaros, mustangs, chargers and challengers, seems that everybody wants to pit themselves against a Porsche, seems that this is only going to get worse now that the new high horsepower models come out, what do you guys think?

Well, there's always the Porsche 918...887 hp and 944 lb-ft of torque. Think that'll keep the rabble at bay??
..... it would keep my wallet at bay
There will always be something faster, newer, better looking, and in many cases cheaper. The other day I was driving on the highway just cruising along top down enjoying the moment and I hear this awful sound coming up behind me and I look over and there is Honda with a soda can muffler speeding up to pass me. Kid must of been around 20 and I am sure it made his day to pass me. I just smiled to myself and whenever that happens I just think of the old bull young bull joke I heard years ago.

Couldn't agree more. My old 996TT was around 650hp when I sold it. The speed can be intoxicating, but it really couldn't be enjoyed on the street. 5 seconds on the loud pedal and I was deep into the triple digits. The stock 997 is a much more balanced package and to be honest more entertaining on the street. I also like the exhaust note of the NA over the turbo.
You could have a thousand horsepower but it pointless if it doesn't get to the pavement.
Here's an interesting comparison of "stock" cars at two different ends of the scale.
2014 Dodge Viper 640 hp 8.4 litre V10 Hemi, 0-60 in 3.2 sec
2014 Lotus Elise 217 hp 1.8 litre Inline 4 Toyota, 0-60 in 4.0 sec
One third the hp an only 0.8 slower. Now that's what I call interesting.
I personally don't buy into the "No replacement for displacement" theory.

I've recently had a gent wave me down so he could say "The 911 is the coolest car ever made".
The real fun, for me, is not "off the line" or 0 to 60. If you drive them right, these cars are so quick it's breathtaking.

These cars are just as enjoyable to drive slowly as they are ripping up the canyons... No matter how much HP those mustangs and chargers have I know they can't hang with me in the canyons or the track... or hang just based on looks

The majority of what I have seen or come up against on the street is that a high hp car like a charger/mustang/camaro/corvette will have it's rear tires go up in smoke from getting on the gas too hard too fast. Its usually no contest to 60 mph and by 80 mph I have smoked them and my point has been made and I shut it down cause there is no reason to get stupid or hurt.
In the 90's I had a highly modified 500 hp, 11 second 1/4 mile car... would gladly live with my meager 355 hp 911 with no doubts. ... there is no comparison to the joy I get driving my Porsche 911... No horsepower jealousy here

another great point was made already too... horsepower to weight tells a whole other story too. There is a reason Porsche was known as the giant killer :^)

My other car has over 400 horsepower and just about as much torque. The entire car including engine is about 2500 lbs (fiberglass body). In a straight line it is waaaaaay faster than my 997.2S but then when I get in the 997.2S and feel the way it handles in and out of turns, I know my other car wouldn't stand a chance in the turns.
