After driving both a 2010 997 and a 2012 991 (both were fantastic to drive, with similar miles on the odometer), I am going to go for the 991. Its more money of course, but it will be a newer car. Since it is going to be my DD, and I have to sometimes take phone calls, the cabin noise level and the upgraded electronics were important.
Good decision. Newer the better. Exploring swapping mine for a newer one myself.

Is your 2012 991 a base or an S? As the owner of a 2011 S, I couldn't justify the price jump just to go from a 997.2 S to a 991 S.

Good question. There's a recent thread in the 991 forum about the extent to which the new sound symposer increases the sound level, and how that compares to the sweet sound of the beloved 997. The comparison was inconclusive, but most of the posts dealt with ways to defeat the piped in engine sound in the 991, and make it quieter.

The 991 is a great car, but I'm sensing a shift in the target market. Quieter? Get a Lexus. That said, unless you're in a 6-speed cab with the top down and a running a performance exhaust, phone calls are still very possible in a 997.

Maybe 30 percent less cabin noise?
Less difference when in sport/sport plus mode.

Thanks for the input guys...in Northeast Pa. they like to tar & chip our back roads and the surface is extremely rough...this process should be done away with...does a job on the paint and road noise is really amplified...

No doubt about it. Just look at the number of threads started by people who want to lower their car but worry about the ride being to "harsh". Or threads about uncomfortable seats and the PDK being too rough. Not the kind of concerns you typically hear from those who buy sports cars.
