HELP! Brake Rotor screws

Hey guys,

I'm doing my very first brake rotor replacement? So far so good and the rears are done.

However the screws (green arrow from this photo) on the front rotors are very rusty and the head of the screws are stripped. I'm thinking of drilling thru the screw head so that I can get the old rotor out, and try to get the rest of the rusty screws out without damaging the thread.

My question is how important are these screws on the rotors? If the thread does get damaged, is it ok to just leave those screws out?

It seems that the purpose of these screws are to hold the rotor in place while putting back the caliper and wheels. And it is the 5 x wheel nut bolts which actually while the wheel and rotor securely?

Thanks in advance

cool flash is infamous around these parts
I was running the original Porsche 5mm spacers and when I took them off this little rotor screw had to come out too. I forgot to put them back in when I mounted the wheels. Never noticed any difference. The rotors are held in place by the wheel bolts anyway.

Regards,

CF

Correct, those screws essentially keep rotor aligned to hub before wheel bolts securely fasten via sandwiching b/w wheels.

That said, hand held impact drivers are great (and very inexpensive) tools for removing as they often freeze. Also try some PB Blaster or Kroil and also heat. Drilling would be my last resort.

And if you re-install, be generous w/ the anti-seize on the screw (and of course w/ inside hat of new rotor where meets hub.

Good luck

hit the screw drive with a hammer some too which may help break the screw free.

What rotors are the new ones? Factory? If so, good choice.
