believe me I have searched and searched and my eyes have gone crooked but I cannot seem to find a definitive answer anywhere

My Car ; a 2006 997.1 CS4 in the UK has the base system installed (Non Bose)
that is a PCM2.1 + SatNav DVD
No Multi CD
9 Speaker System 3 upfront 2 in each door and 2 in the back

I am lead to believe there is an Amp installed in my car ; what I am trying to establish is if this amp is connected via an optical connection like the Bose as all the bumf I find describe the base Amp as analogue and the Bose as Digital

Please has anyone a definitive answer ?

You have an ASK system, without the optical bus. Changing the amp is much easier as you do not need any optical->analog converters.

See sheet 21A for ASK versus sheet 21D for Bose in the attached document. The Bose system has the optical inputs to the amp, the ASK system does not.

Yes I have a good understanding now looking at the wiring diags ; the ask amp actually takes a feed from the amplified speaker outs from the head unit. Proper low fi way of doing things amplify something already amplified :-)

Another question if I may ?

My car also has DVD sat Nav - is this on the optical loop ? I guess it must be a loop joining the In Dash info - PCM Headunit and DVD ? the diagrams suggest it has fibre connections too.
