997 C2 Small Oil Leak And High Oil Consumption

So I have noticed some blotches of oil on my driveway and it has added up to form a bit.

I have also noticed my oil consumption is pretty high, if I push the car a bit I need to put in half a litre every other week or so.

I've sent the car in to my approved Porsche dealership however they can't identify anything.

So is there anything I should mention to the mechanics?

This has been my first Porsche and I love it so much, the driver, the steering is just amazing.

But since the dealership can't identify the problem I am considering just getting rid of it and getting a 991 Carrera, which I don't want to do but it might have to be done.

Appreciate the help guys.

Just had a call from the dealer saying they've seen its a seal which they've replaced and I will be picking the car up shortly.

So hold fire on the 991 purchase I think, lets see how it goes now.

"Pushing" the car can up oil consumption. (Besides pushing it lots of idling and lots of high RPMs can also have oil consumption climb.)

The engine may not be "burning" oil in the traditional sense of the word but using oil because the AOS is lousy at removing oil vapor from the crankcase fumes as they pass through on their way to the intake.

These engines generate a lot of oil vapor especially when pushed (revved) hard.

Be sure the oil is not too old. As the engine runs the oil collects water and other contaminants courtesy of the combustion process and these work to make the oil foam more and more foam means more vapor for the AOS to try to remove.

Avoid overfilling the engine with oil. I'm a firm believer in running the oil right at the max line but this is with the oil fully up to temperature. If cold if the oil level is at the max line when the engine is hot that oil level will be too high and that's not good.

Unless the oil consumption is approaching what Porsche considers excessive: 1l every 1000km (or thereabouts) or there are other signs of engine problems: misfires perhaps; the oil consumption doesn't appear to be anything dire.

Generally before the dealer does anything it will want to do a disciplined oil consumption "test" to really see just how much oil the engine is using and under what conditions. If you are pushing the engine and the oil consumption is high I don't think you'll get much sympathy.

By all means mention the type of driving you are doing that has the oil consumption up. The techs may find your driving style is not the kind that should have the oil consumption up.
