Observe that in the auto industry, Exclusive = losing money. About the only exception would be Ferrari. Name your other exclusive brands: Bentley, RR, Aston Martin, etc. They aren't in control of their own futures.
When Porsche was Exclusive up to 1996, they were getting close to bankruptcy. The company likely would have been bought by another.
Porsche was smart to formulate a way to build cheaper and retain the essential driving experience we love so much. The Boxster was the first model to get them over to financial stability. Then came the 996 and so forth.
Too many Porsche drivers around these days? Just do the math. In 1995, there were fewer owners who could afford a $70K 993, than there are owners in 2007 who can afford a $70K 997.

I don't think we need to worry about the exclusiveness of the Pcars when Porsche has decided to buy off a big chuck of shares from VW. Soon, we'll see the 911s back to their original state. I love Pcars for two reasons (1) they are the best out there for the money in terms of driving experience, (2) they are unique looking sports car and will always put a smile on your face when you drive it on the road =]
exclusiveness does matter, but not the most important factor of the Pcars. It's complete cr*p to say it meant nothing to you when you had decided to attain one for all the years you had waited. It might mean lesser for some people and more to people who value the "status" aspect of the car.

Ya, I only want my friends to witness it haha. but definitely not trying to get more attention on the street. (the reason I will not go for the Fcars/Lcars)
For me, driving a car this epic is a once in a life time experience. I want my friends to enjoy the car as much as I do when they get to sit in it. As for my first 911, I'm going to get it along with my engineer friend. He's so into sports cars especially the 911s =]
It's just our childhood dream to own one and we're getting one asap when the facelift is out :P

I just don't get Porsche nowadays, they have like 40% shares of VW, why do they still need Cayenne, boxster/cayman to boost up their sales?

Everyone also seems to forget that Porsche are selling more cars to Asia than ever before so although they sell more the actual numbers sold into one market may not have increased by as much as you think. Also the aspects of owning a Porsche that appeal to people dipping there feet into sport ownership is the fact that to keep a 911 on the road is considerabley cheaper than a Lambourghini or a Ferrari. Part of the reason for this is Porsches benefit from larger economies of scale than the other cars.
As Chris said for many owning these cars is not about impressing your friends. It is about a passion that people have had for a long time, it is about getting as close to owning a supercar as is possible to the average man. That note doesnt mean necessarily because they are the cheapest but also because they have much lower servicing costs, they have much better fuel consumption and more importantly than all those for most people is the fact that they are still very practical cars.
If you think Porsche have problems in many European countries now BMW 3 series are more common than a car like the Ford Mondeo by a considerable margin
