If ANY of you know anything about stereos... PLEASE...
hey jared...haven't you already taken the OEM headunit out trying to replace it? Are you saying that they cannot get your OEm HU to work after they put it back? The Installer or the Porsche place?
being without your Car that long....
If you can get the oem to work..then the cleansweep and some nice alpine digital amps make sense. that way you can have all of your pCM intact

But to answer your question, not having the ability to have an OEM (or OEM based) stereo is going to kill your resale value. I would REALLY focus on getting this resolved... if you still want an upgrade afterwards, go with Reus.

I got word from the dealer today that they think they found the problem: One of the speakers wasn't ground well. All this time. Wow.
As for the Pioneer unit, what all does the D1 have? Wait, I can look that up. Thanks all of you for your help. I'll confirm with all of you that this actually worked asap.

The rockford 360.2 is a much better piece than the cleansweep from jl . But if you want to add ipod ; bluetooth ; sattelite radio ; and upgrade your sound system . then the answer is clear . change the head unit , you will get a much better navigation system that will allow you to do everything by touchscreen controls. If you do change the unit you will also have to replace amplifiers . It is possible to keep the oem speakers and just add amplifers and passive crossovers w/ the new head unit .I will definately be removing my oem head unit so if you have a probelm w/ your pcm unit and want to keep it factory ,i will sell you mine . It does not make sense that a grounded speaker would keep the cd player from playing . Maybe the speaker was shorting and therefor you had no sound output from the amp.
Great. The JL dealer here is killing me with their long schedules (can't touch the car again for a month). It's good to hear that there's another option (Rockford). But if I change the head unit, I don't need one of those anyway, right?
Thanks man!

Thats the route I took. I opted for the Pioneer D3 because it has a volume **** instead of buttons. It has Nav, Sirius, XM, IPOD, bluetooth, and plays DVD movies for a fraction of the cost to have PCM do some of those things. Dynaudio 362 component speakers went right in with slight modification to the stock plastic speaker mounts. Most of the speaker wires can be found at the factory amp. I just had to run new tweeter wires to the top of the dash as they are wired together with the mids. For now I used the stock Bose sub until our flat sub comes out. I took out the sub amp located inside the enclosure and rewired the speakers in series in order to have ~4ohm impedance. It doesnt play much below 40Hz but its good for now. You cn also use it as is and just add audio signal to it. If you are worried about resale just save your old parts and put it back to stock.

Timely- JL Clean Sweep questions
Mates,
I am having my Clean Sweep installed tomorrow, and hope i will be able to run the iPod through it. Short, uninteresting history- i had a boxster, took out the factory stuff and put in Alpine and amps and new speakers. Sounds great, except for the engine whine occasionally. In my 911, I can't pull the head unit. I tried the Harmon/Kardon Drive+play. It whined like a bratty two year old! I only had it in one day, and then took it out.
Does the Clean Sweep match well with our systems?
Thanks!

Engine/alternator whine is normally cased by an installation error, ground loop or mismatched levels. The Cleansweep has an aux in for your ipod and you must use the external volume control. If you are installing it in a 997 you might need a summing device to complete the install. If you are going to an authorized JL dealer they should be able to do this.

If you have time to PM me, i would like to know what you mean by mismatched levels. I did some of the install work, at least cleaning up the mess, on the boxster, so i know a little about it.
If you change your head unit you will not need the cleansweep or the Rockford 360.2 .
For the user w/ the 996 you do not need the cleansweep . You need the low level plugs that are available for your head unit . Let me know which becker unit you have and i may be able to help you . This way you get RCA outputs from your factory head unit and you can add amplifiers and speakers . Also some of the units have an optional Aux input.
There is no reason to have engibe noise . You may want to invest in better quaility cables and or rearouting the cables as they may be too close to a factory ecu .

Hey everyone,
Not wanting to drag this thread back up for no reason, but I have my situation resolved. Thought some of you would want to know, possibly.
Here's what happened since I posted last:
The Porsche dealership said that the head unit not working was the fault of the stereo shop. They said that they wouldn't warranty it for this reason, in addition to the fact that I have an iPod kit in my car (which is stupid). So, if I wanted them to fix it, it would be $3,600 for the head unit, a few hundred more for speakers which are also blown from the issue, plus labor at around 15 hours including a ton of diagnostic time. Wow. So, I go back to the stereo shop and kind of give them some ultimatums. They now have put a Pioneer D3 head unit (double din, navi, Sirius, Bluetooth, DVD, etc), some Focal high end speakers in the doors, a larger JL Audio 4 channel amp, and two JL Audio 8" subs in a custom enclosure. The last of those isn't in yet. They just put in a rinky-dink MTX 10" sub in a truck box. I didn't give them enough time to do the JLs this time because I have to pick up the car this afternoon and drive straight to VIR for two days of tracking. As a side note, I don't even have enough time to put my 19" lobster claws on with my PS2s. I'll be tracking for two days on 20" Avus wheels with P-Zero Neros on the front and Contis on the rear (I literally ripped both of my rear Pirellis at the drag strip. Dropped it too high and they hooked up.) Anyway, they stereo shop has said that while they don't think they are at fault (CYA speak), they wanted to give me some of the stuff for free. I told them that that wasn't necessary (I want them to be good to me on my Audi Q7 and other cars too). The total tab, with installs and everything, is $3500. Assuming it sounds good and looks good, I'm happy. I'll take pics and post if anyone's interested. Just wanted to kind of put this one to bed.
Thanks to all of you for all of your help.
