Fastback is infamous around these parts
You really have to go see these cars in person before throwing a bid. They can be rusty pigs and a lot of them are full of plastic. You've seen the pictures of my restoration. As it sits right now, I have $50,000 in structural repairs alone. That's a ridiculous amount of money to spend, but my car has sentimental value to me that can't be measured in dollars.

The car you're asking about has just a couple of minor things, that make me think it was assembled in haste, or that the builder lacked an eye for detail. First, the wheels are 14", which nobody uses anymore, and the offset is all wrong. They were probably laying around the garage, so they were slapped on this car. If you look at the close-ups of them, you can see they're old.

Looking at the body, it looks pretty good in pictures. The hood is a little high and the front bumper is tilted incorrectly. The body panels are probably as good as they were from the factory, but you should expect a lot better in a restomod. The sealant around the driprails is done terribly. Looking in the doorjambs, you can see that they've painted the doorstikes and hardware - a sure sign of mediocre body and paint. The driver's side door is missing at least one door bumper. The door catch has also ripped out of the door. This is a common problem caused by years of slamming the door. There is a proper way to repair this...a couple of giant washers isn't it.

In the engine compartment, the semi-flat black was hastily sprayed into a fully assembled engine bay. Several components that should have been natural have been painted black. All of the bolts, which should be phosphate and oil finished, have been sprayed black as well. The radiator wasn't replaced or upgraded during the engine swap - something I would definitely want to do. Several pieces, like the air cleaner and valve covers, look as though they were taken from other projects and slapped on this car. A well done car would have a nice set of matched components.

Looking at the underbody, it looks pretty solid. The floorpans were treated to a sloppy coat of black paint from a spraycan. The seat plugs are missing from the floor, probably ruined when they were removed, but when you're asking top dollar for your car, you need to invest the extra $6 for replacements. It's little crap like this that makes me very suspect of this car. If I can see all this stuff in the pictures, what can't I see?

On a personal note, I don't care for the color. I don't like Shelby stripes on a car that's not a Shelby (that's been played out for 30 years). I also don't like the Shelby quarter windows in place of the rear vents. I think the vents were the Fastback's strongest styling element.

Geez, I feel like Simon Cowell. Sorry.

I'd probably buy the car but first I'd want to know if it was an ORIGINAL 4-speed car and an original V8 car.

One a separate note, given the incredible investment you saw in the BLACK Mustang in the other series of posts, the owner should want to sell it to you for $50K given his circumstances. I say that because you're such a class act and most rodders would rather see their P&J in the hands of someone like you for a "very nice price" than see it go to someone who's willing to pay $5K more only to destroy the car. You're only looking at a $15K spread in all likelihood vs the Blue car. Otherwise, I'd say find a REALLY CLEAN V8 Fastback car with 4 speed and V8 and do the job yourself. Paint ($10K) Engine ($10K mild build) and Interior + Brakes ($10K X 2) ~ @ around $10K each AFTER paying $10K for a STOCK rust-free driver (months of searching) and maybe that allows you to do something that becomes completely your own, if that's more important than simply acquiring the black car and having instantaneous (and incredible) value. People are getting away from bone stock so WCS you can put some mufflers on the black car and have something tolerable and as a resto-mod you might have a car that at least maintains its value.
